44 Magnum Factory Load Chrono Info
« on: July 01, 2012, 03:15:59 AM »

 I tested 2 44 magnum factory loads in my 14" Contender and in my Ruger SRH 7.5", the Hornady 240 grain XTP and the Winchester (white box) 240 grain JSP.
Three shot averages listed.
Ruger SRH
 Hornady = 1403 fps
 Winchester = 1357 fps
 Contender
 Hornady = 1723 fps
 Winchester = 1709 fps

 When I get a chance in the next couple of weeks I am going to test some factory 30-30 loads in my Contender.I am aware that factory loads can and most likely will vary from batch to batch (maybe even box to box), don't know how much. Also the listed velocity is obviously not for a 7.5" barrel as I don't feel they will vary that much and wanted to how my guns performed

Charlie, thank you for your contribution. However along with simply giving the mean velocity please give the extreme spread shown by each load. This is an important piece of data. Of course we have all seen loads that dont look so promising on chrono numbers that still shot well.
Still, the load that has a smaller ES (and therefore SD) is more likely to perform well.  This is especially the case when shot strings are 10 rds.
It is interesting to see the relative mv generated by each firearm. It is a pretty dramatic increase, even with three rds. rp

You are correct, that info would be helpful.  Especially in looking at a larger number of shot strings.  Actually would be helpful in knowing what kind of variance one can expect from factory ammo.   I'll probably take a few more shots the next time I test ammo.  I don't expect to see variances that would make a significant difference at the distances that I will shoot but as the saying goes, it is what it is, as I don't reload.
