My first rifle was this in .22 - model 56 or 57?  Like a dummy I sold it, young and foolish youth!  Wish I could find another one....

22S,L, and LR version is the model 57 if a tubular magazine, a 56 if clip fed. I have my Marlin Model 57 "Levermatic" I got for Christmas in 1964, as well as the owner's manual. Shot a LOT of rounds thru it! It holds 27 Shorts for fun.

It seems to me .256 would make a good compromise as a small game/varmint round between .22 mag and .223. The problem may lay in finding ammo but you can roll your own out of .357 brass.
