Former firearms company employees start gun-manufacturing business LHR Sporting Arms to unveil company's first rifle in  winter

ROCHESTER, N.H. -
Four former employees of a  New Hampshire firearms company are starting their own gun-manufacturing  business.

Smith & Wesson-owned  firearms manufacturer Thompson Center Arms moved from Rochester to Massachusetts  in 2011. Rochester lost more than 200 jobs. Many of those employees stayed in  the area.

Foster's Daily Democrat reported the four former workers have  started LHR Sporting Arms. They are planning to unveil the company's first rifle  this winter.

Others who used to work  for Thompson have expressed an interest in working for the new venture. The  company hopes to have about 20 employees by the end of next year.

I wish them well.

I would like to see them make the original Contenders, and original ten inch barrels (octagon, and bull.

Hopefully their first rifle is a break action single shot.

I'll wait until their new rifles specs, etc are reveled before being impressed.   I wasn't a fan of any of TC's modern cartridge rifles (Icon, Dimension, Venture, Semi Auto rimfires, etc), so the old crew will have to be innovative to get a nod.

Patent infringements will prevent them from making Contender's, probably also the octagon barrels.   They could design their own version of the Contender platform though, and make similar barrels to use on TC Contender and Encore platforms.

I think the Contender has been out long enough that the patent has expired.  Also, if Bergara can make Encore barrels, what would prevent them from making Contender barrels?

What they really ought to bring back is the TCR rifle.  I wanted to buy one about the time they quit making it.  Their first bolt action rifle is about like everyone else makes so made me yawn.  They may be on to something with their switch barrel bolt action rifle but I'm not getting one since I have Blasers which are better.

I'm with you, having yet another boring bolt action on the market will do nothing to stir my soul. A lightweight, compact, single shot carbine at an affordable price made in my home state of NH would definitely get me interested in buying one.

On the patent issue; correct me if I'm wrong, but after seventeen years, anyone can copy the product.  As for TCR rifles, I whole heartily agree.

Not to single Grumulkin or anyone else out..., so please don't take it that way.

Sometimes I don't get my point across when trying to have brevity in my posts.   Most know here I normally don't do that for exactly that reason.   So me bad!

It's a given that custom shops have been making and selling aftermarket Contender barrels for way over 30 years that are "similar" to TC design.
Speculation on my part, but I seriously doubt any of them infringed on TC patents even in the early years.   TC may not have cared anyway, may have wanted the extra versatility to help promote their platform before they had a so called custom shop.

Concerning patents, I was only speculating on what known facts I was aware of and am certainly no patent expert.  I based my comments on TC's last Contender design actually produced by them.   If patented it would probably have been in 1997/8, the time period when they changed the easy open version to include a renewable lower breechblock.   If patented then as a design patent it would run for 14 years, as a utility patent for 20, and patents can be extended.   How long they can remain on the books if extended I have no idea, but TC would have to continue to pay patent maintenance fees on them.   Utility patents protect designs better and longer because they allow for revisions, so are the most common.   That's the unknown in this case as the last design change Contender may have been protected on a previous "utility" patent already on the books instead of them applying for a new patent on it.    While the G2 Contender was a twinkle in their eye then under normal R&D of a company, I doubt they would have produced that last Contender version at all unless at that point they had planned to continue making it (and thus would have wanted patent protection on it).   Leaves the possibility that if a new utility patent was done at that time it wouldn't expire until 2017/18 even without extension.   Again, ONLY speculation on my part.   Discussions of this nature are ALWAYS just speculation at best without confirmation by TC themselves.

I've rained on the parade of the OP's intent of this thread long enough over what is really just moot points anyway that may have little to do with this new company.

Back on track, IMO only time will tell if the new company really have something innovative in a new rifle, or just another also ran knock off of what was nothing special from TC.

Larry's comments are quite germane. We;d hope that any group of potential investors/executives would have adequate legal help to determine what they can/cannot do and as importantly whether they should do it.
We'd also hope they were astute enough in the trade to read forums such as this. The past/present/future product users who actually have long term experience on ranges and in hunting fields probably know as much as anyone on t/c products. If you arent going to do valid market research, how do you know what to market and how much potential demand exists.  Then you would want to know exactly what the market will buy. There is much more acceptance of synthetics than there was forty some years ago.
About the time the Contender was introduced, Remington was bringing the nylon stocked .22s and the xp100 into the market. The Contender had wood and steel then. As years passed they added synthetic furniture. It is critical to potential success to address the correct product to the correct market. Bill Ruger and Alex Sturm realized this in bringing us their Standard .22 pistol and when they modernized the Single Action revolvers.
Lets hope this group is at least that savvy.   RP

Being as savvy as Bill Ruger, Alex Sturm and Warren Center is asking alot, but, here's hoping.  Of course these guys worked for Mr. Center and with a great group of men who also had a lot of savvy themselves, so hopefully it rubbed off.  Our country has a great tradition when it comes to designing and building firearms but of late it could use a good shot(pun intended) in the arm.  I am anxious to see what they come up with.  Like others I hope it isn't another run of the mill bolt gun with some whiz-bang bell or whistle added. ::)

Amen, on the just another bolt gun.  It's been done to death.

Unless of course, they want to make Winchester Model 70s exactly like they were made in 1963, and do it at great price.

I don't see anybody aas not agreeing to wait and see what they come up with.   Long time employee's of a company usually do have new ideas that the company decides not to go with for any of several reasons.   So its a wait and see as everybody has said, with the hope they don't follow TC's lead in cartridge rifles.

I wish someone would give my idea a try I'd like to see a contender like handgun down sized alot about 1/4 scale of present size and make it availble in 22, 22 mag and 17. Cut the barrel length to about 7" so I can fit it in a normal holster. I don't want a cannon just a plinker single shot. The hot shot has a little down sizing but cut that in half again. and you would have about what I'd like to have.
