Gun Safe move - photo op.
« on: August 12, 2012, 11:13:45 AM »
Moving my gun safe so I figured I'd get the girls together for a couple of pics.

R to L: 1884 Trapdoor, 1898 Krag, 1903 Springfield, '54 Springfield Garand from the CMP, '41 Springfield Garand, '40 Springfield Garand, Yugo Mauser, Chinese SKS and my sporterized '98 Krag along the bottom.

All of the requisite bayonettes showed up for the party as well.

Oh wait, there are a couple of bayonettes without rifles to go with them.  I need to rectify that imbalance!!!

Curtis:  nice photos.  When you said 'get the girls together', I thought you meant gettin' the wife and daughters to pick up the gun safe and move it to another room.  Geez......

Mikey, I could have used some help for sure.  Not sure if it's worth all that though.  Besides, I'm old and single with an empty nest.  Not going back now.  :o

That sporterized Krag is really beautiful.

You can keep the Garands though.  When I was about 20 years old, and weighed about 125 pounds, I shot my father-in-law's Garand.  I laid down in the prone position, put that steel buttplate in my bony shoulder, and fired off a clip.   Wow.  Lots and lots of pain.   It felt like I broke my color bone.  Never shot one again.

Thanks Manny, I really love that Krag.  I'm thinking about hunting with it this year instead of my Contender.  I'll be hunting on the ground, so I don't have to worry about banging it up getting into a tree.  I'll take the Contender just in case that changes, as there are a few climb-able trees where I hunt.

Nah, the garands aren't bad being so heavy and gas operated.  Of course, prone is probably asking for some punishment with almost anything that has recoil.  It's the 8mm Mauser and the '03 Springfield that'll pound ya though if you don't roll with it.

1968 I was in Beeville Tx working at the Base armory (aviation Ordnance).  We had 50 garands that were sweet shooters, due to a build up of the base Armed response team we added another 50 garands.  All 30-06, same as the others.  Difference, new ones kicked like a mule.  Same ammo, rifles seemed to weigh the same but a major difference in recoil.  Never did figure that one out.  New rifle stocks were not darkend by oil but the difference in weight should have been minimal. so, some are sweet to shoot, others kick hard!
