Scope for 45 Colt Buffalo Classic
« on: June 09, 2012, 08:47:57 AM »
I don't shoot iron sights well.  I put a "standard" length rifle scope on the Handi- and it overpowers the small carbine.  I am not favorable to Red Dot as they look "punk" (too stubby & too square) to me.

Would a Pistol scope of say 5" to 6" survive the Handi-?  Recommendations?  Links?

Look at the so called tactical scopes often used on AR Rifles.

I've had a Simmons 4x shotgun scope on mine for years.  Pretty short and worked so far.  They have a good rep on this forum.  If you got $$ the Leupy 1-4x20 is pretty short.

LO,

+1 on the Simmons 4x Shotgun scopes.  A Lot folks like the Prodiamond 4x but I like the standard rectile scope, I have six of them and no complaints.  Optics are good for a scope that sells new for under $25 and they are fairly short and have a bunch of eye relief.  Also the eye piece has a lot of adjustment so you can get a clear picture no matter what your vision is like.  I have shot these scopes on 45-70s, 20 ga Tracker II, 30-30 Win 94, 45 cal smokeless MZ, etc and am very happy with them.  Natchez SS seems to have the best deal on them last time I checked, I bought 4 of them them about $102 including freight.

Any of them will hold up just fine!  Even with "Ruger" loads its not that big a kicker to effect even "cheapo" scopes.

45-70 makes a good point, there are new designs in red dots and some like the Bushnell he recomended are neat little numbers!!

One of mine wears a Pentax 4X and the other (the 454) wears a Leupold VX II 2x7x33....

Another one for the Simmons "shotgun" scope. But no reason a pistol scope wouldn't hold up to a pistol caliber in a much heavier platform. Mounting might be an issue?

I've recently read that a Contender mount will fit the mid-barrel sight holes (if there are 2) and you can use it as a scout mount for a pistol scope.  Never tried, but sounds interesting.  Different barrel diameter...

A fixed low power scope would look great on the carbine.  ;)

See Scout Mount info in the FAQs for info on the Contender mount, it wouldn't work on a Colt carbine tho, it's dovetailed, no mounting holes.

I like the Bugbuster series mil-dot scopes by leapers.  Short and compact.  This is the 4X32mm one on the wife's .357.

This would be a nice compact one also and it's rated well:

I have become a huge fan of the Nikon Omega series, particularly 1.75X5 on my shorties. Its just borderline too big, but looks great with its 6" eye relief and forward mounting position. I have 4 and 2 more on the way now...

If you want pics, send your cell # and Ill TXT some.

The old Weaver B-4 and B-6 scopes have about the right mass to not look out of proportion, but you will need to find the 3/4" tube to std. Weaver rail rings. They dont have the light gathering of the larger bell and tube, but I like mine. There are also some old 7/8" tube scopes that look good (IIRC, Weaver D series); take a look in the scopes section of an old Guns Digest for tube dia. info.
FWIW, if I wanted a newer scope, Id look at BB's suggestions as good to go.

I've got quite a few of the Simmons Pro Hunter scopes, they work great and let me hunt during legal hunting hours just fine.  Not quite as sharp as my Nikons, Leopolds or Ziess scopes, but cost a darn sight less.  Tim got me to buy some of the old Simmons 2.5X20 shotgun scopes that Natchez had for $20 each.  Bought 5, one had the cross hairs break, the other 4 are still going strong.  They ride on my playin rifles, not used for hunting.  I also like the Weaver 2.5's, got several of the old ones and a few of the newer ones before they dropped em.  (At least Natchez put em on closeout and I haven't seen any since.)  Any of the scopes that have a 20mm objective will look better on the little BC, I also run em on a lot of my levers, don't "over power" the smaller rifles so much.  I have a couple of the Nikon 1.5-4.5X20's and a couple of VX III 1.5-5X20 that ride on my BLR's and a couple of favorite Marlin levers that are used for hunting.  These scopes all work very well and I think they look pretty good as well.  DP

I will have to +1 another on the Simmons Pro-Diamond. Suprisingly clear for the money, the fixed 4X I think is the best. Works great on my 500. For low light or anything up to 150 yards cant beat 'em. Further out the adjustments might get coarse etc, but that 1st 100 yards ::) and they are very fast on target.
