19 youngsters found unattended in Kentucky home   by Associated Press WHAS11.com Posted on July 3, 2012 at 2:05 PM       BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) -- Authorities in south-central Kentucky say 19 youngsters were left unattended for about a week in a sweltering home in Bowling Green.
The children were found Monday when the Warren County sheriff's office responded to a complaint.
Deputies found 19 children ranging from 8 months to 14 years old with no supervision and no working air conditioning or food.
All the children were treated at a local hospital and then placed into protective custody.
Nine dogs and one cat were also removed.
Conditions inside the residence were in excess of 90 degrees. The conditions were reported earlier by WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tenn.
Temperatures reached 101 degrees in Bowling Green on Monday.
Police are still investigating.
 
 
News just said the mother of some of them had left town, she said with a family emergency. POWDERMAN.

I have seen 14 yo's who were capable of being a substitute parent, and others who were not worth much.  The sterotype of Kentucky is that 14 is ready for marriage.  That is not a knock, some of my family comes from Missouri where a girl is ready to marry if her head sticks out of a barrel; if it doesn't, you cut off the barrel.  (Grandpa teased grandma with that one).
  Who were the other parents? If it was really a family emergency where was the rest of the family.  Once upon a time a tight knit neighborhood would look after their own, but those things are in short supply nowadays.

KENNYD. I'm sure there'll be more info forthcoming. The part about no food in the house was terrible. I can't imagine turning my kids loose with somebody like that and not hear from them for a week. POWDERMAN.

I can't come up with what sort of family emergency would make someone run off and abandon ones own children.

I'd be willing to bet that drugs are involved. No new news on this yet that I've seen. POWDERMAN.
