bp versus pyro

 can anybody tell me the reason for the difference?? Itook a powder measure and weighed a volume of bp, it weighed 36.2 gr. then weighed that same volume of pyro, it weighed 24.4 gr.  Most of the info I read says cut back pyro 20%. What gives 24 gr versus 36 gr. = 33%??? :D

Pyrodex is less dense-- but similar volumetrically.

Randy is correct. I have never seen anything about reducing Pyrodex 20%, use it as a substitute for BP volume per volume. 777 is hotter and may need to be reduced.

You haven't "seen" anything because all flavors of powders are measured by volume -- not weight.

777 gives you the most bang for your buck -- also the most potent bang. You will use alot more real blackpowder (Swiss excluded) than 777 per jug - per measure. You will use less 777 than Pyrodex per jug. Posters in general can't seem to accept paying a few bucks more for 777 because they don't realize that a little 777 does it's job better per currency spent to obtain it.

For good reason-- in terms of cost per shot at similar velocities with loose powder, Pyrodex RS is less cents per shot. Using MidSouth prices, Pyrodex RS is $11.45 per pound, Triple 7 is $16.86. The rest is just math.

Those that really want the most bang for the buck are shooting 300 gr. saboted bullets in the Savage 10ML-II with smokeless powder. 41 gr. of VT N-110 get you in the 2100 fps + area with a 300 gr. bullet in the Savage. Even 170 grains of Pyrodex loose powder won't do that.
