Changing rifle hold in high power silhouette
« on: April 16, 2012, 07:41:18 AM »
Last match I did fine on pigs and turkeys, but had problems on Rams and chickens.  I took a range finder and was able to see that the rams were plus one degree and chickens were minus 1 degree.  Pigs and Turkeys were 0 angle.

I adjusted my front hand rest position 1 inch back for rams and 1 inch forward for chickens.  In dry fire it seemed to be just as steady as my normal hold, which I will continue to use on pigs and turkeys.  The people I shoot with just stick with one position.  1 or 2 more animals will have me winning these matches, so I thought I would give it a shot this match Sunday.

I was wondering if anyone else did this.

Another way to change your vertical natural point of aim is by moving your back foot.  Moving it forward for a tighter stance lowers your NPA while sliding it back to a wider stance raises it.  But if your way works and is comfortable go for it!

This is especially interesting when shooting at the Whittington Center. Chickens and pigs are quite a bit downhill, and rams are up. And you're at 7000 ft. elevation. It takes some getting used to!

Well I shot a match on Sunday.  Moving the hand back 1 inch got me 5 rams.  That was good.  1 inch forward still got me 3 chickens.  Missed first by one animal.  I'll have to try the foot moving thing on the chicken line.  After the match I did shoot 5 of 7 shots on chickens.  Maybe just more practice.  Can't get enough of that.  My concern on stance change is that this one is very wind stable, but I'll try anything.  That's what got me to the point I am now.  Only 10 guys shooting these matches usually, but two new guys have been coming regularly lately.  Was cold at 35 degrees and zero's really changed compared to last months 65 degree day.
