Friday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency in Louisville announced that over the last eight months they’ve intercepted 32 shipments from China coming through Louisville, netting 70 pounds of bath salts.
Because the drug comes in a constantly changing form, it presents a unique challenge for law enforcement. Drug manufacturers are making bath salts out of legal materials. But, they are materials that were never meant for human consumption and they’re combining to make a highly dangerous and unpredictable drug.
When the packages are intercepted, the contents are sent to a lab in Chicago where they determine what ingredients went into each shipment of the drug. It helps law enforcement keep up with how manufacturers are changing the drug to get around laws.
