Guess it's that time of year....

Most have lost the gardening bug and are in the seasonal migration toward hunting.  Trust you all have had a great season and that things will pick up this winter when you get the gardening itch again.

Yes I am transitioning to the hunter mindset, but the soil needs attention.  I burn the weeds, plow or till then gather leaves and more clippings to mulch over the top of the garden.  Between the plowing and mulching soil samples are taken, and if Lime is needed now is when I apply it (ag lime not quick lime).  I am also gathering seeds for the spring. Squash, onion, radish, carrot, green beans, popcorn, and sweet corn all were allowed to go to seed.  These will be planted in the heirloom garden, next year.  Also this is the time of year to grab up seeds at steep discounts.  If you can find what you want and the seeds are not left from more than one year ago you can save a few bucks by buying seed now.

Now pardon me while I work out some loads for the deer rifle, and scout out a few squirrels for the pot.   :D

I am trying my first cold season garden. I have always planted a manure crop of some type of greens and just let the wildlife have them. This time I still did the manure crop, as well as went small with a practice garden. My intention is another very early Spring garden to follow it. I have an 8 month warm weather growing season. May as well try to squeeze another couple of months out of it. In a worse case scenario the rabbits will have a little more variety for a little while this year.  :D

I still have to clean out the tomatoes etc, till and plant some winter wheat etc.  Bow hunting starts Oct 1.
