Odd old traps....... new to me!
« on: July 17, 2012, 10:34:00 AM »
I'd taken some pictures of a friends trap collection, he was packing to move, there were types of traps I'd never seen before, the traps with coil springs and made of rod and bar stock were what really interested me.

Thats my size 11 shoe in some the pictures

In pic 1766, the #3 Neuhouse, my brother has about 100 of those along with 150 or so #4s. They aren't made any more and are REAL expensive to buy today. The last ones I saw on Ebay were over $300.00 each. In the same pic, the new looking trap on the floor looks like one the State of Texas tried to catch coyotes with and not harm them- tree hugger style. Not that it made any difference when the gun went off. They used steel jaws and rubber padded jaws. They didn't work for crap- too slow for a Yote and not near enough holding power. Takes a heck of a trap to catch and hold a coyote, at least a South Texas coyote.
In pic 1767, bro uses a drag like that for his hog traps. You should see that thing flying in the air when a hog steps in a trap. It's a real rodeo to watch them try to run thru brush while the drag catches on brush. Then the hog turns and attacks the brush. Like I say, it's a rodeo to watch.

Looks like some Bigelows,Koros and square 330s among the batch.
The problem with the antique bear trap--a lot of non trappers have been led to believe-- those are the traps we are now using.
Larry--Texas coyotes are not a big yote, the northeast and midwest have a lot larger yote. Also takes a lot smaller trap than most believe to hold them-good springs and good trap placement are the key.

Tom, my brother traps all over South Texas. He'll book about 3000 coyotes a year. Some are in traps, some by calling, and most are caught in snares. I can assure you, he'll disagree with you about the size of the trap. He traps some of the largest ranches in Texas and he's had trap makers come down with their traps and they usually leave with empty traps while his Newhouse traps are catching Yotes. Kinda hard to argue with success. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Newhouse #4, mostly because I can't set one without help. I don't have a clue what the spring rate is but it's a lot as you probably know. He can set one so fast you have to watch closely or he's finished before you know what happened.

Newhouse 4 is a wolf trap--way overkill on yotes--but thats my opinion.
Many states limit the jaw spread to that of a #1 3/4 and those boys are still taking yotes.
