Malcolm 18" 3x scope on a buffalo classic 38-55
« on: July 09, 2012, 10:15:51 PM »
I would like to mount a Malcolm 18" 3x scope on a buffalo classic 38-55.  Hi-Lux says they dont have any blocks that will work. I was wondering if anybody has ever tried to do this and how they did it.  If i cant figure it out i will have to mount this on another rifle but it would look so good on my 38-55 it would be a shame.  any ideas or help would be much welcomed.
Michael

There is a rear base available for the BC that uses the existing holes in the barrel that should not be an issue. Its the front base that i am wondering about. there is no info on weather or not i can simply have a base drilled and tapped into the barrel.  bases can be had from steve earl in several different hights so is that an option?

You can order blocks from Brownells that will fit those scope mounts, there will have to be some drilling and tapping done. But take a bit of word of caution from someone with experience. The mounts that come with those scopes are just one short step above scrap metal. Once you get your scope zeroed , don't change it or you'll play holy ned getting it back to the original zero.
You can upgrade the mounts by going with the unertyl type mounts from DZ arms, but those will set you back about 400$, so by the time you get thru with that, you may want to consider calling Montana Vintage Arms and inquiring into their new Winchester scopes. about 500$ will get you the basic mounts and scope, 650 will get the scope with longrange unertyl type mounts, but you're still likely to have to have the barrel drilled and tapped.

not sure i would want to spend 4-650 on a scope for a 300 dollar rifle. What i was going to do is set this rifle up for one distance if i can get 200 yards out of the rig i would be very happy. onece set up i would probably just leave it as is for that range. I was just worried about the drilling on the barrel seems like if done correctly it would not be a issue.
Thanks

The blocks that come with the scope will/should fit your rifle barrels contour. There are mounting screws with those, so all you need is a competent person with the proper sized drill and taps. Remove the sights on the barrel, punch any new holes required ,thread the holes , and mount your scope.

Ah there's the rub. finding a competent gunsmith in my area. most of the small shops have been put out of business by dicks walmart and gander mountain.  I will ask at the one dealer i use and see if he can refer me to a good one.

Any machine shop should be able to drill those.
I even did the install on my C Sharps in my garage. You can get the drill and tap sets from Midway.
There's also a fella by the name of Steve Earl that builds custom scope mount bases.
But like you say just the cost of the scope will be equal to the value of the rifle, so at some point you have to do some serious cost analysis.
