Updated today at 9:54     Gallery  See all 31 photos »  NEW YORK (AP) -- Joey Chestnut won his sixth straight Coney Island hot dog eating contest.
 
The San Jose, Calif., man known as "Jaws" scarfed down 68 hot dogs and buns to win Wednesday in Brooklyn. He takes home $10,000 and a mustard-yellow champion's belt.
 
The total tied his personal best and the record. Last year, Chestnut won with 62 hot dogs.
 
Second place went to Tim Janus with 52 hot dogs, who takes home $5,000. He was third last year.
 
Chestnut is now tied with is former rival, Takeru Kobayashi, with six wins. Kobayashi did not compete.
 
Sonya Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., downed 45 hot dogs to win the women's competition.
 
The Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest has been a city tradition for 97 years.

I've seen these and wondered whether there's some toxicity in bombarding  yourself with that may hotdogs. They have a lot of nitrates, nitrites and salt.
 
Then there's the question of whether they're doing internal damage bye eating that much volume of anything.

This has always amazed me how one could eat all that. I think about after the 5th hot dog and bun soaked in water, it would be coming back up. How is it the little guy is the one that always wins, while the big bisket eaters finish near the end? You would think some 600 lb. guy would be winning this.

Surly when they get out of sight they throw all this crap up. Dont know, but seems the body would have a hard time digesting what would amount to 5 gallons or more of junk.

If this kind of thing weren't documented, I wouldn't believe it on a bet.  I don't know if you could cram that many hotdogs into a large grocery bag.  Also, when that stuff starts coming out, the contestants had better not be very far from a rest room

I'm still tryin to find the entertainment value in this. Three or four dogs and a pan full of meat scraps is the only thing I can thing of as a comparison. And just as about as entertainin. Hmmm
