a few mosin rebarrels ( lots of pic's)
« on: April 25, 2010, 05:32:04 PM »
i'll start off with the one thats actually shooting. the others still need chambers cut and other work before they make a trip to the range.

this one is chambered in 220 swift AI. its built on a hex receiver & the barrel is from a remington 722 that was originally chambered in .222. i rethreaded & re-cut cut the chamber to 220swift AI. i soldered a bushing to the bolt head to reduce it down for a .473 case head. i also had to shim the extractor back .010 & slightly deepen the extractor slot in the bolt head. i had to rework the interrupter/ejector so it would protrude farther out into the action to hold the cases in the magazine & catch the casehead to eject the spent cartridge.

modified bolt head

barrel being threaded

220swift in magazine before fireforming.

after fireforming there is about .015 space from the shoulders to the inside of the magazine.

the sights were way to low to use comfortably.
first 3 shots went into right at a 1" group. i wasn't really trying for accuracy, i just wanted to see if it had potential.

i couldn't hardly see the front sight so i swapped it out with a brass beaded front sight that was in my range bag and shot 3 more times.
these are from a standing rest at 50 yards. it came out to right at 5/8"

eventually i plan on putting it in a european classic stock from great american and installing a sidemount with a weaver k-6.

this one has a finned 7mm barrel from a madsen light machine gun. i'm going to chamber it in 7mmx54r. to cut the chamber i'll just put a 7mm pilot on my 6.5 vostock reamer then use a 7mm neck & throat reamer to finish it. i'm still working the stock, once i get it to my liking i'll glass it over & paint it. the bi-pod is borrowed from my ar-15, it will get a parker hale style bi-pod mounted to a stud sticking out the front of the stock. i still have to figure out what i'm going to do with the bolt handle & optics since i don't really care for any of the off the shelf mosin scope mounts.

this barrel is from a russian maxim machine gun, it will remain in 7.62x54r. i'm considering building a winchester marksman style stock for it.

this one has one of the czech uk-59 machinegun barrels on it. it will also remain in 7.62x54r. the receiver is from a romanian m44. the gap in the rear bridge has been filled and the bolt handle has been moved to the rear of the action.

timney trigger

the timney triggers are nice. i got two of them before they sold out their first batch.

i'm also planning a target rifle chambered in 6.5 vostock & a dg rifle in 9.5x54r

I see that you are not posting images of your barrel and receiver clamps. Exactly how are you removing the original barrels?

Very nice work. You certainly have produced some interesting rifles and with a fairly small outlay of cash... The Aussies produced a fair number of wildcats with the rimmed 303 and some of the same type could be done with a Moisan... What kind of lathe do you use and as to scope mounts, perhaps a scope type mount using a normal scope instead of the EER scopes the scout mount uses..

anweis, i'll try to get a picture of my receiver wrench for the hex receivers this weekend. on the round receiver actions i use a standard mauser receiver wrench with a spacer on top of the receiver.

all of the barrels i've removed were already toast so i wasn't worried about saving them. i just chuck them up in my lathe and  make a cut with a parting tool about .040" in front of the receiver to relieve the tension then clamp them in a bench vise. they come right off. if i was pulling a barrel that i wanted to re-use i would machine a steel bushing for my barrel vise, my barrel vise is similar to the old b-square barrel vises.

gunnut69, on the 220 swift barrel i used a grizzly 9x19 lathe. the finned barrel and the maxim barrel i had to farm out since they are both larger in diameter than the spnindle on my lathe.

for scope mounts i'm going to start out with rock-solid mounts on the finned barrel rifle & the maxim barreled rifle. eventually i'm going to make my own mounts and rings similar to what the finn's used on the TKIV-85 mosin sniper rifle but i'm going to use a standard 60° dovetail with a tally style recoil shoulder instead of the sako style tapered dovetail.

if i get a chance this weekend i'm going to finish reworking the rear part of the stock above the pistol grip on the finned barreled rifle.

Those are some great pics, thanks for shaing them. Looks like you are having fun building Mosins which is a rare thing nowadays ...very cool  8)  I haven't found a scope mount that I like either, I will make one of my M-44 barreled recievers into a scout, but for my 91-30 I want a closer system.
Keep us posted.

UcantCme, good maxim barrels are hard to come by and average $200+ when you do find one.
DAT19K, those uk-59 barrels are only available on the auction sites now and have been going for around $300. i wouldn't pay that much for one.
i haven't done to much on my mosin projects and i realy need to get back to work on them.
the scope is mounted on my 7x54r, i used a burris ar-15 mount turned backwards on a short section of picatinny rail. eventually i'll contour the underside of the mount to match the receiver and mount it direct to get it a little lower.

9.5x54r project.

9.5x54r dummy round next to a 7.62x54r

a couple of turned down uk-59 barrels, i also made sleeves for the stepped down section right in front of the receiver.
top barrel finished at around .980"

Excellent work--very interesting.  I have one hex action destined to be a switchbarrel between 7.62x54r, .30-06AI and .300 Win Mag.  Eager to see progress as it happens, thanks for sharing!
