I used to shoot there when I lived in Provo, UT.  I have seen some real jackholes up there before.  Shooting propane tanks hoping they would blow up, throwing live centerfire ammo into a burning barrel, and lots of drinking while shooting.   I doubt a bullet sparked against a rock but I bet that's what they told the authorities.

The bung holes could have been shooting tracer ammo.

Yep, tracers would probably do it but I doubt regular ammo would.  Myth Busters did an episode where they attempted to prove/disprove the movie myth about a car blowing up when a bullet hits the gas tank. They dragged a metal gas tank out of an old car out into the dessert and proceeded to shoot the snot out of it.  They end result was a puddle of gasoline and a gas tank that resembled Swiss cheese.  No explosion, no fire, not so much as a puff of smoke using standard ammo.

The rule is to never miss a chance to blame some form of evil on guns.

I think the ones doing the blaming are the ones most at fault, like the Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy, Greenpeace, World wildlife fund, Audubon society, National wildlife federation, and other environmental groups.  these groups pretend to be saving the environment, but in fact are enablers of irresponsibility on a grand scale. I think they know they are to blame for letting forests build up huge amounts of fuel, but like every thing else with these type of people, the blame must be placed on someone else.
Many of these environmental groups survive on the idea that they are saving nature, the earth, and the environment, and they receive large amounts of money in the form of donations from people that don't know any better, and have bought into the idea that these groups are saving us from ourselves.

Ha-Ha, you can bet Bush is getting the blame from some of the wackos. I remember once hearing stories about how Bush was at fault for California fires.

This is another shooting fire in a location the low RW and high temperatures along with the wind create a cradle for fire.

I have been told that the core of some Russian ammo produces more sparks that can set a fire then US military ammunition.  I can remember as a boy scout practicing fire starting with flint and steel.  Logic tells me that in locations that low RH is common, below 14 percent that is common in Western States there will be more fire starts.

I have never heard of a 22 rimfire starting a fire.

That reminds me of when I was a kid my buddies dad had an old 303 brit and we took it out in the woods late one knight and fired at an old junk car and I remember the sparks flying. I think it was old ball military ammo.

I can believe the sparks argument, although it seems a bit of a stretch. I've seen sparks from sporting ammo. Howver, by the sparks logic, the entire states of montana and wyoming should be burnt to a crisp by now because there is so much recreational shooting done there during the hot dry summers there.

When I fired it at the engine block I could see a tracer like spark shoot in the air and then we ran like hell because even though it was a big patch of woods it was in city limits.  :o
