Why did they do that?
« on: July 21, 2012, 10:47:45 AM »
I have a Rem Model 600 in 308. With a Richards Microfit stock under it, it is by far the prettiest gun I have ever owned. It is also very accurate!
What I can't figure out is that Remington put a ventalated rib in the barrel. It makes for a great conversation piece, but is that the only reason,to make the gun look diffferent. The s curve bolt does that!

The barrel heats up when the rifle is shot,  and  the sights get off center. The vent rib is above the barrel and has air cooling the bridge the iron sights are on, so it keeps it more accurate. Ugly yes, but tough too and its a collectable rifle ( to some ) .

They were very accurate rifles from those I've dealt with. The 2 I owned were a 222 and a 308 like yours.. The 222 was stolen but was an accurate rifle indeed.. the 308 also is a fine shooter but recoil is brutal.. Not too hard but so very quick!! It shoots reall fine groups but, for me at least, it's a jinx. If I carry the gun I'll not see a legal animal though switching guns usually results in quick results..

got to keep in mind they were made back when big finned cars and lots of chrome were the style. Im sure that vent rib and laminated stock made the same guys drewl that bought wby markVs. Also it was about then that vent ribs on shotguns hit the scene and im sure someone at rem thought if it works on a shotgun why not put it on a rifle. Biggest chuckle came when they recently introduce the copy and still put a vent rib on it.

I bought a 600 in 350 Rem. Mag in 1967 ! It remains to this day , the only gun I ever sold because it was just too brutal to shoot ! I do wish I'd hung onto it till now though , they are fetching good money today .

OMG - In my one horse town area, the Rem 600 in a 350 mag. was The one to get for many years. The legend lives on to this day. People still talk about finding one @ a reasonable price. The short barrel & vent rib made it look very tough. Especially back in '64. I own a model 7 in 350 mag.. What recoil, no more than some 06's I've owned.

Hmmm the story I read about the vent rib said it was to distract the eye from the skinny barrel.

How true that is I don't know but the article also mentioned the fact the Remington also made versions with a heavier more normal barrel profile and no rib for some of the big chain stores.
