New Model 700 ADL (SPS) trigger, can it be adjusted?
« on: February 13, 2012, 07:35:09 AM »
I had an ADL 20 years ago and adjusted the trigger on it, pretty easy.  Bought a new ADL, it is real budget, molded trigger guard and matt finished steel.  I thought all the new Remington 700's had the Mark X trigger with the easy access adjustment screw in the trigger shoe, not this rifle.  The trigger is solid, no external adjustment found.

I have only had it to the range once, the scope mount was acting up and I could not sight it in properly, will try again with different mounts and scope.  The trigger pulls at 4.25 lbs, a little heavy for me.  I have not messed with the trigger as I have read that this will void the warranty, and I need to work with this rifle for awhile to know it will not need to be sent back to Remington.  I figure with the "Budget" aspect the trigger assembly might be a fixed setup, has anyone adjusted their triggers on these new ADL/SPS models?

Thanks.

Same trigger is used on them as on the rest of the M700 line. Now which trigger you have depends on the age of the gun. The older ones were fine easily adjusted triggers IF you knew what you were doing. Too many didn't and their adjustments made them dangerous.

Then they went to the X Mark and it was a really excellent trigger and easily adjusted. It really is my favorite of their triggers. The only Remington trigger better than it is the 40X trigger.

Currently they are using the X Mark Pro. I HATE that one. I have two rifles with them and kinda doubt I'll get another. I will eventually buy aftermarket replacement triggers for them. Neither of the two I have are even remotely adjustable. yeah there is an adjustment screw but it changes nothing whether all the way in or even taken completely out of the trigger.

Sounds like you have an older adl which is a good thing, just remove the action and work with the 3 screws on the assembly. Make sure you test it by slaming the bolt closed hard, it can be dangerous. I too have had no luck with the x mark pro, I wish they'd sell them with no trigger at all since its a joke and good triggers cost about $130.

Thanks for the replies, what is odd is there was an instructional tag that came with the gun titled "X-Mark Pro Trigger.  The inside picture does not show the adjustment screw through the trigger shoe, but the older type without seeing the 3 adjustment screws that you would note when taking the action out of the stock on the older guns.  Yet they claim it is adjustable.

I will need to take the action out to visually see if there are 3 adjustment screws, if so, then I will do a trigger job.  If not, then I will look into an aftermarket unit as 4.25 lbs is too heavy for bench shooting.  I would like it closer to my Mossberg 4X4 which has a 2 lb pull.

So, it seems that Remington has issued several trigger variations over the years, I have heard of a "Walker" trigger, after the engineer who designed it.

Timothy, Another test for the old triggers with the 3 adjustment screws or any action that you do trigger work on:    Close the bolt with the safety off, then bounce the rifle up an down  hard on the work bench striking the butt plate or recoil pad, the rifle should bounce up 2-3 inches or so off of the bench.   Closing the bolt as hard as you can is a good test as you noted, many Remingtons I have worked on after others have messed with the trigger will not pass this test, the sear engagement is too little and the cocking piece will over ride it during the bolt slam or rifle bounding exercise. I no longer work on rifles for others due to the liability issue that Remington is trying to avoid.   People will file lawsuits with or without justification.

Both triggers are X-Mark Pros.  You have the good one and it's easy to adjust and works great.  Just adjust the weight don't mess with anything else.

This is foolishness and false.

if you know what your doing just about any trigger is ajustable. If you dont know what your doing and have to ask about any of them can be made dangerous.

Sure there are plenty of bogus lawsuits against all of the big gunmakers.  Your info is 30 years old and has proven to be false.

Hey GB, don't buy new triggers yet. I do trigger jobs on those new ones with the screw in the blade almost daily and they can be made to be VERY nice. The deal is that they have two trigger return springs. One in the blade and one in the normal location. The one in the normal place is quite light and actually is perfect if you get rid of the other one. I disassemble the whole thing, you have to remove the trigger blade to get the spring out since it only is removable from the back. Then either grind down the screw and replace it so it looks normal or just throw it away. Stone the surfaces like normal and put it back together either with a new E-clip or the original if you didn't lose it. (It's incredibly hard to remove and not lose it) and adjust as normal after you use a torch to loosen the thread locker they use on the sear engagement screw. Of course put purple Loctite on the screws when you're finished so they don't self adjust.  They end up as nice as any Remington trigger can be, and you didn't have to buy anything new. Plus they're way better quality than most of the aftermarket ones.

America is the only place you can do something stupid like adjust a trigger even though you have no clue how to. Then compound the stupidity by unsafe gun handling ending in killing someone then get 12 people on a jury to side with you and make money on the scheme .

How are the new remingtons? I have been thinking about getting one but I have heard the rumors that always go around about different guns.  I am curious to know if there is any truth to the rumors.  I am thinking about getting one in 30 06, maybe a SPS if they are ok.  I have always wanted a reminginton 700 and now I am out of school and am working, but I am worried about spending money on something that i might have to dump more money into just to get the rifle to do what it should have done out of the box.

midmo over all Remingtons are great rifles whether or not you will have spend more money on them depends a lot on what you expect out the box. It's not unreasonable to expect a sub moa rifle but most likely it won't shoot bug holes. I bought the SPS Tactical in .308 out of the box with premium ammo it was a 5 shot .5 moa rifle. With a little load development it was dang close .25 moa.
I  did replace the Mk X Pro trigger because it would not stay adjusted it kept increasing pull weight so I added a Timney trigger.
The Hogue stock it came with was useable but a bit wimpy and quirky IMO so I replaced it with a Carlson bedded it with Devcon much more stable. It's still a .25 moa rifle even after a year of working up loads for it. That's all it's capable of with out some metal work. All in all that's not bad performance from basically factory rifle with a few after market accessories.  If your looking for better performance than this your probably better of to buy a custom rifle to start with. A friend of mine has an older SPS in 30/06 and after some action screw tweaking and searching for a good factory load it does about 3 shot .75 moa  never over a inch and once in while it will sling out a 1/2 group. not to shabby for an  unaltered factory rifle. With some bedding and a decent trigger I think it would a very consistant rifle.

i am looking for a good hunting rifle but something i can shoot at the range and be at least moa.   I have a marlin xl7 in 30 06 now and it shoots sub moa out of the box.  I have been trying to decide if i want to another rifle or just a new stock on my marlin.    I have always wanted a 700 though and thats my problem.  If i just get the stock for my malrin i am going from a synthetic to a laminate.
