Gun rights while traveling
« on: June 26, 2012, 12:25:43 PM »
My wife and I plan to take a road trip in a few weeks from Mississippi to Iowa to visit family.  We'll pass through Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri.  We then plan to drive up into Minnesota and possibly Wisconsin.  An option on the way back would be Illinois, where I know neither I nor anyone else can carry.  I have a Mississippi Firearms Permit and have undergone approved training and have received a special sticker on my permit that reduces the places where I am not allowed to carry.  For example, I can legally carry a concealed firearm on a school campus.  It's easy to get information about whether the above-listed states will honor my concealed carry permit, but I would like to know more about requirements and restrictions concerning having a firearm in my vehicle, particularly in Illinois, which seems to be generally hostile to gun owners.  (I'm not remotely considering driving into Chicago!)  I'd appreciate information based on experience traveling in these states.

I stop and disarm myself everytime I cross the ILL line. I believe there that the gun has to be in the locked trunk and unloaded. Not sure about the other states. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I wouldn't even consider carrying in Illinois.  Placing the firearm in the trunk could be a problem; we'll be traveling in a Ford F150.

Here is a map that show which states oner your CC permit. Just click on your state and a color code at the bottom tells you which other states accept your states permit. As you can see Illinois is black, meaning right denied.

My question right now is how legally to transport a firearm in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois.  It's clear that my concealed carry permit would not be honored in those states even though a permit from Minnesota is recognized in Mississippi.  I'm not sure about Wisconsin because their law has recently been changed.

In Illinois, the firearm must be in an enclosed case and unloaded.  It's not required to be in the trunk.

last time I checked (when going into the states you noted on my way to Canada ) federal law requires the weapon be in one part of the vehicle and the ammo locked in another. In the case where there is no trunk or other compartment then use seperate lockable containers. The rub is in some locations local leo's don't follow federal law. They figure it would cost you more to challenge them in court than to replace a weapon. In most cases that is what happens.
I would suggest you buy a less expensive gun maybe a police trade in , transport it meeting the federal requirements and if you lose it it won't be as big of a loss as if it were a expensive gun or one that has meaning to you.
one other concern with federal law - it must be legal for you to have the gun in the location where your trip starts and where you finish . So going into a state where you cannot have the gun then turning around and going back to where you started from could be illegal in some peoples eyes.
Some find a 870 with an 18 inch bbl for sporting clays in a take down case a good travel partner  ;)  in places where handguns are taboo.

What a mess!  Is it worth the trouble?  My usual out-of-state travels are in neighboring states plus Georgia.  I'm not too concerned in those states, except maybe in the cities of Mobile, Atlanta, Memphis, and Birmingham, and Jackson in my own state.

PM I clicked on KY and all the states around it are blue which if you look at the color code it indicates that the states colored in blue honor KY permits. All the states around KY does honor KY citizens permits except IL.

Another source is GeorgiaPacking.org   There is a map showing the states that honor Georgia's permit.  You should be able to gain some insight as to where you may encounter a problem.  Illinois is the prime problem; as you know.  Mississippi and Georgia are reciprocal.

As far as NOT going into Chicago reminds me of a recent trip from Florida going home. I screwed up, between myself, the wife and the GPS I ended up on a highway leading into New York(city) without being able to exit prior or turning around.  NEVER again. I'll risk a ticket by making an Illegal U-turn.

Last summer the wife and I traveled from Minnesota to Boston. We would have liked to take our shotguns along to shoot clays on the way back. I had found some clays ranges that sounded interesting. After checking into all the different states laws I GAVE UP, and left the guns at home.

Kind of interesting subject. Up here in "Socialist" Canada I can transport any properly secured non restricted firarm coast to coast as long as I have a valid Possession License.
