Looking at my first H&R
« on: July 17, 2012, 02:34:56 PM »
I am looking at getting my first H&R.  I am looking at getting a 47/70 or a 444.  I would like to know the good along with the bad about H&R.

The good is they are inexpensive. Can be very accurate. And are fun to shot.

Read the faqs and handi basics 101, they will tell you what to look for when purchasing a handi. The good is the ability to switch barrels with a minimum of mechanical know how or you can go the factory fitted route. You can customize them at will quite easily. With a lil work most of them can outshoot guns costing 3 to 4 times as much on average. It is very easy to rechamber to certain calibers if you want something different or a full blown wildcat or a cartridge no longer chambered by the mfgs. The two calibers you mentioned both have a good reputation among handi owners. You have more bullet options if you reload with the 45-70 but I say get what YOU truly want-not what we tell you.

The bad, handis have had their share of qc issues but if you follow the info in the faqs and handi 101 you should be able to avoid these issues. I dont think ive really ever seen a thread on a bad 45-70 tho. The only other complaint I really have is the barrel contours, they are a lil hefty. The handi 101 has saved me on a couple purchases.

BTW welcome to gbo!

I got the 45-70 because everything about using it seemed more versatile, easier to get and less expensive.  The 22" barrel is lighter than smaller calibers because there's less metal with the bigger bore.  I had to put weight in the stock.  Shoots accurate for me.  No problems.  Easy to reload.

45-70 was my first, 20 years ago.  I still have it.

If you reload or not, the .45-70 is more versatile.  It was my first and still a favorite Handi.  As has been said, there's a wider range of bullets and ammo available, and easier to find.  I have 15 Handis now and have had as many as 20.  Yes, I've had a couple of minor problems, but they were easy to fix.  I had one .22-250 that wouldn't group.  H&R put a new barrel on it and did a trigger job, free of charge.  I had it back in two weeks.  Now it shoots MOA at 300 yards.  I have had nothing but very positive dealings with H&R factory service.

I don't own a .444 because my .45-70 will do more.

I don't have either one I have a H&R 450Marlin Ultra hunter but if I were you I would go with the 45-70 because I think the available bullets are better than pistol bullets.
