Question when reloading the 270 handi
« on: July 14, 2012, 02:01:58 PM »
I notice today when testing the function of some of my reloads for my 270 handi that the primers have scratches or drag marks on them after closing the action on them.  The question I have is that normal my 45/70 doesnt do it but this is the first high pressure handi I have owned.

I only have one handi-rifle and its a 223 but there are rough marks on my primers but only after firing hot loads.  this is from the machining marks left on the reciever and my primers pushing back. Are you sure your primers are seated all the way in on your test loads?

Do the shells fit flush or just below flush when you chamber them ?
You may have a slight headspace issue were you need to set the shoulder back a couple thou. , does it do it with factory ammo ?

This sounds like the primers aren't seated in all the way.  Otherwise how could they drag on closing?

I second the high primer, as the case should have marks on it before the primer. The primer should be a little lower than the case.

Typical 'high primer' issues. Are you cleaning the primer pockets after firing? Are you using other branded primers than the cases? What are you using to seat primers?

I agree with high primer,I've got the same problem with my 308 when I don't seat the primer quite far enough, are you using a hand priming tool or the press? When using my press I don't have the problem, but I like to use the hand press so I can feel them seat.

Might be the primers I'm using a hand priming tool and used the same force for the 45/70 and 44 special as the 270 the primer pockets might be tighter.  At least I only loaded 5 for now so they can be "unloaded" without much fuss.  Thanks for all your help.  Sometimes I miss the forest for the trees so to speak.

FWIW, my old Lee hand priming tool got to where it wouldnt fully seat primers; I had to 'relieve' the stop portion a tad with a file. The second one I bought used off a gunshow table had a crack in it that flexed and wouldnt fully seat either. Lee kindly replaced it. I lube the moving parts in those tools and they have seated thousands of primers, but I believe that used one had been 'overpressed' by the previous owner. A primer isnt all that hard to press in if the pocket is clean and it isnt something like an unswaged pocket on a mil-surp case, although I have heard/read that sometimes (for example only) Win primers in Rem cases might not fit as well as Rem primers, but I have used quite a variety of primers in mixed cases without trouble. Maybe Im lucky  ::) .

Sometimes the primer pocket can be tight, if in doubt about the primer set the case on a level serface and see if it rocks back and forth, I run my finger over each one as I prime them.
