« on: July 31, 2012, 03:05:26 PM »
I have a model 617(22), and a model 648 Smith(22mag). I have a chance to buy 2 colt troopers Mark 111's in 22 and 22 mag, all are 6". What is your opinion on thes guns as compared to each other?

Ive had both at the same time (S&W and Colt's) and even though they are dbl. actions they are enough different that your preferences will soon become obvious. The Colt's are very well made and, for me, a delight, though not without their issues on high mileage pieces. Most end up with one brand or the other, not both. If you can afford them, get them and do the trials. You wont have any problem getting rid of the brand you decide against.

I pretty much agree with what has been suggested, although what I can add won't be of much use to you in this case other than to suggest you go with what feels right in you hand and you shoot the best and you'll get more enjoyment out of them.

I've owned a bunch of Colt's and a bunch of S&W's over the last 50  years for the Colt's, 40  on the Ruger's, some of each I liked, some of each I didn't.   So it's a personal choice for me.   What feels better in my hand, which I can shoot the best with determines which I keep and which go to live with somebody else eventually.   When it comes to revolvers it's the platform more than the brand name on it that works for me.   I prefer old school single actions over double actions.   So my favorite rimfire revolvers have always been Colt's and old model Ruger's.  Some of them still reside with me, none of the Colt or S&W double action do despite those I've had being great revolvers.

I have both a Colt Officers Model and a Smith & Wesson K22 and like both of them. Both are very accurate and both shoot well with just about any type of ammo.  But, if I had to  choose, I would keep my K22.

I feel fortunate to have both
I have a Colt trooper 22LR (I would love to have a crack at a 22mag)
I have a 617 and 648 S&W

Honest hate to admitt it but I collect and cherish the Colts and shoot the crap out of the Smiths

The Colt Trooper has a trigger that was made on another planet
It puts my other trooper and even my Python to shame I cant explain it
its blue and 6 shot

I take my 617 when I bought it I got two guys to help me pull the trigger I called Smith and they dont lighten the trigger on those because of the rim primer. I had a trigger done locally and it was too light (lots of misfires) it was refined and now it is great.
Its more accurate than I will ever be when I shoot it I shoot so much the barrel is very hot
Its the shooter and I am sure you could never wear it out

So for me
The Colt is an occasional shooter
the Smith is give me a brick and lets go!

I had a 4" Trooper III in .22 mag.  which I sold soon after I bought it.  It was as heavier than my .357 Trooper III, and I didn't shoot it well.  The K frame .22 Smiths seemed light to me.  None shoot as well as my Sig Trailside or even close.
