SHTF Powder
« on: August 08, 2012, 05:35:11 AM »
I am wanting to buy a keg of one powder to load 223, 243, 30-06 and 308. Varget and BL-C2 seem good candidates. Thoughts?

IMR-4895 might be a good choice

4895.  It's the "Unique" of rifle powders. You can reduce the loads and still get accuracy.

In particular Hodgdon 4895, as it an "extreme" or non-temp. sensitive powder. Where I live there has been about a 110 temp. swing in the past year, so I'm big on that. It won't get the fastest speeds in the 223 or heavy bullets in the 243, it is perfect for the 308 but a little fast for heaver 30-06 loads so buy the keg of H-4895 and a pound of H-4350 for heavier bullet loads. Good shooting-Muddy.

There are SO many IF's with this question. Do YOU have to carry it from place to place? Do you intend to load on the "run"? Is your "cave" wet or dry? I personally hope TSHT never happens, but several thousand .22lrs and a few cases of shotgun ammo will last quite a while if it does happen. The guns and supplies of those bad guys I run across will add to MY stores.

Lots of unique because a little goes a long way.  You can make just about anything go bang with it and in a SHTF situation your probably going to be more worried about noise levels and making what you have last than long range accuracy and ultra flat trajectories.  Oh yeah, and add a 45/70 and bullet molds to your list.  It is quite possibly the most versatile cartridge out there and will preform well with a huge range of powders from black to the latest greatest.  Lead is available everywhere so all you would have to carry is powder, primers, a mould, a ladle and a Lee Loader.

If I shot bottleneck cartridges anymore I would consider another powder but these days most of my loading is for three 45 LC pistols and one 45 LC rifle. With a few 38 sp and 357 mags on the side. My one powder would be Unique. As it is I put Unique in everything anyway except for the hot loads for the rifle. It likes Lilgun.

Unique works in shotshells, pistol and bottleneck cartridges. I can't think of a better SHTF powder.

the two you chose would work as wood 335 748 4895 benchmark and 4198 personaly id opt for a ball powder though so you could eliminate weighting  of charges every time.
