The CEO says the department store chain is replacing all its technology infrastructure with a new system that will not require clerks.
Instead shoppers will use self-checkout machines similar to those found in many grocery stores.
The company hopes to phase out checkout counters by 2014.

This won't last long.  Once they start noticing tags from the cheap clothing being removed (but the clothes left on the rack) and their expensive clothing disappearing from inventory...... they'll realize they made a mistake by eliminating the human cashier.


I always hated the self-check stations.  It makes it far to easy for criminals to steal.

I hope Penneys can survive. They have a great clothing selection.


About six months ago I posted a lamentatin here after finding my old favorite Penneys without a selection of mens clothes for me.


I am happy to say that I went back two weeks ago to find them back to their superb selves. I found a couple of shirts, a pair of pants, shoes, and a belt and was out of the store in 23 minutes. That's what I want in a clothing store. Good product, good selection, easy to try stuff on, and fast checkouts. Penneys is the best, and I hope they stay that way.
