45/70 or .308
« on: July 19, 2012, 02:09:42 PM »
Need some advice, I haven't bought a new handi in almost a year, came across a 45/70 with 22 inch barrel new in the box with 50rnds of ammo for $300 and a .308 ultra hunter NIB with simmons 3x9x40 scope for $275. I really don't need either one, I have a 50/70 and a 7.62x54 already but since when does need have anything to do with it.  I can only buy one, what do you think?

Personally, I would get the 45/70.  50 rounds of factory ammo is worth about $80 (give or take), making that $300 price tag a pretty decent deal.

And beside, I only have 2 45/70's now, and I probably need a few more.

Best of luck no matter which you choose.

Nothing quite as much fun as a 45 70 and cast bullets...except maybe a 50 70 with cast bullets ;D   Tough decision!

Good luck!

+1 on the 45/70 if you handload, even more if you can cast. The 308 is good for milsurp stuff.......

The 308 is pretty much "All Purpose". The 45-70 lends itself for more "play".

This may ruffle some feathers but the 308 Win is a better choice, reasons being:
 Better bullet weight choices
 Uses less powder
Factory ammo is cheaper and more plentiful
 Reloading components are cheaper
More bullets per pound if you cast
 Flatter trajectory
Less recoil for upper level loads (both can be loaded down to low recoil levels)
If a properly placed 30 caliber bullet won't stop it you ain't got any business shooting it to start with ;D

 8) threre are a lot of 308  rifles available, but not a lot of 45-70's............and in the Handi,  the 45-70 is a lot more fun to shoot.........I would prefer the 35 Whelen over the 308  for the same reason.........

True, but where's the fun in all that logic!!! ;D

I'd go for the .45-70 but only because I already have a .308.

It looks about like a toss o' the coin could ge either way.

To be on the safe side you could get them both. ;D

I would think it depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to impress friends, the 45-70 does that, not that many around and you can load them up to the point of making a real impression on them. The 308 is just too mundane. If you want an all round hunting rifle or if you are going to do a lot of shooting, then the 308. Personally I would rather impress myself and my personal choice would be the 308 Ultra. The Ultra is a fine looking rifle. My wife thinks the Handi Ultras are the best looking rifles I own. For all the same reasons that jeepmann1948 has given is even more reasons to get the 308.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I started thinking about this and since I currently only have one receiver and swap 6 barrels, I did the sensible and thing and bought both. Was real lucky with the .308, it is my first Ultra hunter and a great looking rifle and as an added bonus my 7.62x54r barrel locked right up on it like a bank vault.(None of my barrels locked up on the 45/70 receiver) I shoot the Russian caliber the most and mainly hunt with it, I will probably use the .308 barrel for some project in the future. The 45/70 I had to buy to keep my 50/70 company. Told the wife if you had one, you have to buy the other, she didn't buy that excuse.

The addiction continues

handishooter,

My 308W Ultra barrel went the project route.  Stubbed back into its self it made one very fine .30 carbine barrel.  8)   Thanks Larry!

OK Friends I am sorry to confuse the issue with LOGIC ;D , but luckily Handishooter did the correct and right thing by getting them both.
Congratulations and welcome to a good start of chronic  Handi addiction!
