Lubing maxi's?
« on: January 26, 2004, 04:05:56 PM »
I have accumulated between myself and 2 sons a total of 4 small game percusion rifles. 3 .32's and a .36. We have many maxiballs for these rifles but no sure, fast way of lubing with borebutter and the likes. I have heated bb and poured into a cylinder filled with maxi's but wasn't impressed with the out come. Any suggestions?

and why, jrdavis? My roundballs were 1 1/2" groups at 25 yds and my maxi's are one hole. I wouldn't be doing those critters any justice cutting their ears off.

Good question sduve! I was pondering the same thing last week. I was thinking of getting some LEE liquid Alox and trying that.Borebutter and Crisco is kind of messy and a real pain in a hunting situation. Please, anyone with some experience with prelubing maxis help us out.

Cut a playing card in half, roll it around a 32 or 36 caliber slug and tape.  Put slugs in pan and add molten lube, when lube hardens, slide card tube over slug which will cut the lube. Just keep sliding over more slugs and lubed slugs will be pushed out the top of the card tube.

I cast my own .50 cal Maxi's and use my own lube.  I use 5 parts of beeswax to 3 parts virgin olive oil blended easily in a Pyrex measuring cup in a suace pan of water on the electric stove (double boiler method).  When cooled it is more solid than bore butter and easy to hand lube a bunch of maxi's while watching the tube.  I only fill the bottom groove of the maxi as that is entirely sufficient and I get no leading.  I can do a couple hundred if the movie is boring, less if it is good.  My maxi's are cast from an old original TC mold and weight 350 gr when cast of 1-16 alloy.  I drive them at 1530 fps with 90 gr (V) of Triple 7 FFG out of my TC Blk Mtn Magnum. They shoot into less than 1" at 50 yards and into 2" at 100 yards.

I tried the bore butter and pan lubing methods and found them to be a pain and entirely too messy.

Just what I do.  Doing the same to .32s and .36s shouldn't be any more difficult.

rollingb...I generally us a TC Renegade with aGMTN .32 drop in. I am not going to scope it but may use a receiver sight in the future. I've only been shooting at 25 yds tinkering with the powders. Right now I'm using FFF in 777, 20 gr. My Traditions is shootin 25 gr of pyro P just as well.

Is thet GMB "fast twisted" specialy for conicals?? I"d think it would shoot "one hole" groups with roundball (if it was a "roundball barrel")!!
Yore powder charge sounds like a good one!!

Don't be "high on" for us newbies,, it's ok to share,,tell the truth,,the topic is small bore .32-36 and game gettin,,what lube? what's a good grease?..today!! not so much what was done years ago ,,but how does a traditional shooter ask today what to use with a traditional maxi in a .32?? What's a good homemade molten lube to pour over maxi's and push through homemade die??

When I lube bullets for my .58 I just grab them by the nose and dip them into melted lube up to the top groove and then set them on waxed paper to cool. Might be a little tougher to do with the little .32s ? The answer to the borebutter mess is to stiffen it with beeswax. I only used borebutter once, before I started looking for something better (and CHEAPER). The beeswax-olive oil mix is good, right now I'm messing with beeswax-lard mix.

Thompson Center made a cap for their bore butter where you put your bullet in on one side pushed on the tube pushed another bullet in the lubed one comes out on the other side. seems like you could make one out of pvc parts ..a tee some cpvc 3/8 tube for you .32 or .36

sduve, I would stongly recomend a Lyman peep sight for hunting squirrels and such. I have the same barrel as you but its in a Lyman hawken. The longer sight plain really makes a difference. As you already know this barrel is a little heavy but aimed at an upward angle it  can be very steady.3 weeks ago I got 7 head shots in a row, Really had my buddy with his scoped .22 lookin at my BP rifle with interest. Had alot of fun hunting "limb chickens" that day.

Grump stay away from the Lee Liquid Alox for muzzle loading projectiles it builds up a tar like substance in your bore. Lee does not reccomend it for muzzle loaders! It works great for smokeless loads though! Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

sduve a person gave me a patch lube recipe last year that i think would make a good conical lube, looks and feels alot like the lube on the hornady plains bullet.
Its real stiff and sould stay on a conical good.

 6oz-beeswax
 4oz-crisco
 2tbsp-murphys oil soap

melt the crisco on low heat in a coffie can on the stove, then the beeswax, stir it up some and add the 2 table spoons of murphys oil soap and stir.
Now let it cool down to a solid.Later reheat and add the conicals siten straight up and pour the lube around em up to the level you want on the bullet.Sould be a pan that you can use again next time.
let cool and pull out,or use a small pipe that fits around the bullet and cut around it.One feller used a speed loader for this on another board.
I have never used it on a conical but it made a very stiff patch lube that slide down the barrel shot after shot with no swabben, this was a .54cal.
I use a different lube on patches now but i still have a coffie can with this lube in it that i wouldnt hesitate usen on a conical someday.right now im haven too much fun with roundballs. :)  :D

Well, I melted a lb of Crisco and a lb of beeswax this weekend. Went thru 500 .32 maxi's, 100 .36 maxi's, and 180 .54 conicals. Worked out great in a non-stick pan and pushin them out with my thumb. Have a lot of lube left too. Thanks for the replies. sduve
