dirty Nylon 66
« on: July 28, 2012, 12:51:34 PM »
I just bought a Nylon 66, looks pretty good, when I disassembled it for cleaning I was shocked, this rifle has never been cleaned!  The carbon buildup is incredible!  Soaked in Kroil, nothing, soaked in Barnes solvent, still won't touch it.  On the carbon I can easily get to I can scrape it out but, what can I use for a solvent in the nooks & crannies? Appreciate your input.  Thanks.  Roza745

I had a guy bring over a 10-22 that was that way and the only thing that would touch it was the spray carb. cleaner from Auto Zone and a tooth brush , just DON'T get it on the plastic stock on , it will dis-color it badly .

Be careful what you use to clean it with.  IIRC some of the internal action parts are "nylon" too.

In fact I think Remington actually recommended not using any lubricant on the internal action parts, or at least some of them anyway.

I seem to remember that it was quite popular with eskimos (and probably others) in arctic regions because it would function in sub-zero temperatures, due at least in part to the fact there was no lubricant to freeze up.

Hoppe's #9 the old standard. Back when the Nylon 66 came out it was about all anyone used. It still works just as well now as it did then.
