Some where I picked up a 3/8 stainless steel ram rod blank already threaded for jags.  I fitted a stout wooden handle to the other end.  I serves as a range road for all my guns from 50 cal to 12 ga.  I did make a muzzle protector to fit the 3/8 inch steel.

I bought a 1/2 inch dowel rod for my .50 caliber.  Cut it to an appropriate length, carved some wood away to make the handle in less slippery, and "bowled" out the other end to curve over the ball or bullet.  Makes a dandy range rod, but it certainly won't work as a regular ramrod.

For guns of .45 caliber or larger I use a 7/16" dowel rod.  Just decap a .40 S&W cartridge case and drill out the primer pocket and tap 10X32, that will slip easily onto the dowel which is both epoxied and pinned to the wood. I then epoxy a bit of antler or something for a handle on the other end. Wood is a much easier material to grasp compared to a thin, slippery metal rod that you'll never want to use anything else and if you pay attention to the handle material your wooden range rod can be 100% acceptable at primitive events where stainless steel would be thrown out. They are so cheap and easy to make that you'll be tempted to make one for each gun but one rod with different jags will work for loading, cleaning and ball pulling for rifle, musket or shotgun. I have a 36" stainless steel rod which I never use, the wood is just much more friendly. ;D
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
