What rings/Mount for Savage 111???
« on: October 19, 2009, 08:54:54 AM »
Got a Savage 111/.30-06 from "Dick's" with a junkie scope on it.  Wanted/Needed to upgrade so I got a NikonProstaff with BDC.  Problem is the the distance between the rings exceeds the Scope tube length making it impossible to mount the scope.  I would appreciate any/all advice on particular models/makes of rings/mounts so that I can get er done before deer hunting opener.  I had bought some Offset rings for another gun with a eye relief problem but can't remeber what brand or model they were... no longer have the gun.

I have the "Ironsighter 2-Piece Weaver-Style Extended Front" scope base set on my Savage 111 in .270 Win.  I have a Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40 scope with Burris Zee rings mounted on it.  Seems to work okay.

On my Son-in-Law's Savage 270 Winchester, I looked for awhile for 2 piece scope mounts that would not only fit the scope but would allow the scope to be placed far enough back so you didn't have to crawl the stock to get a good sight picture. In frustration, I finally went to the Warne 1-piece tactical mount with multiple cross-slots for either Weaver or Picatinny-type scope rings. This allowed the necessary flexibility of mounting the scope for me. However, my SIL is short with a corresponding short reach and I still had to have the stock cut 1" to fit him, even with a Leupold 6 x 36 fixed power scope with over of 4" of eye relief. You may not have that problem.

The Warne 1-piece tactical mount does somewhat restrict access to the magazine from the top, though it does not in any way interfere with ejecting rounds. However, my SIL's 270 has a detachable clip, so this was no issue for him.

Good luck in your quest. I almost went crazy trying to find the right scope mount for this rifle but I am glad I did (find the right mount that is). This has got to be the most accurate across the board rifle that I've personally ever shot. The accutrigger also is a nice touch.

I use a B-Square 1 piece weaver mount with Warne rings holding a Nikon Prostaff on my Savage 110 30-06.  The B-Square has a cutout over the bolt that helps with loading but is still rock solid.  Apparently Nikon didn't want their scopes mounted on long-action rifles.

I also helped a friend with the same rifle. Seems like the action is just long. Maybe the bolt lug design? I have a 280 Rem 700 which is also a long action but it did not have the same length action. We actually bought a BSA sweet 30-06 that did not fit. We used a dednutz mount which was made for this left hand gun which fit perfectly. The problem was finding a scope that could span that distance. We had to return the sweet 30-06 scope and search for a suitable scope. My friend found a scope for his and made it work. It is one of the best shooting factory rifles I have seen. My question is would that WARNE mount fit a left handed rifle? It was one of the bases we considered after seeing my brother in law use one.

Georgen71,

I assume you're referring to the 1-pc Warne tactical mount. I really don't know if the Warne mount would fit your friend's Savage?  You can go to Warne's web site and contact them about this just to be sure. There is one important thing to be aware of, if I remember correctly: You need to find out if your friend's Savage has the Accutrigger or if the receiver is round. I believe Warne has a different mount for some of the different Savage models. Warne should be able to assist with this also.

Good luck.

I realize this thread is 3 yrs old but i was having the same problem with my Savage 111 in .300WM
The crappy El Cheapo Bushnell didnt stand up to the recoil after the Savage "Barrel Break In" procedure.
I took the Leupold VX1 off my Win 88 and with the Leupold rings it would not fit with the the Weaver bases either, so not just a Nikon scope long action problem.
I like Picatinny idea ;)

Try the Weaver 402 base for the front base or find a B-Square one piece base.
