Is there much difference in the quality of brass on the market? Who makes the best? When I first started, I just bought enough bullets to shoot a match from whom ever, now I have a large assortment of brass, do I need to toss it all out and start with one brand or is there a way I can sort the ones I have into groups?

Yes there is some difference between different brands of brass. No I wouldn't dispose of it and start over! The difference isn't enough to worry about when shooting CAS. It's not a real precision game and the minor differences won't be noticable.

In the big bore rifle cartridges though, I'd use one brand all the time. It CAN make a difference there.

A lot of CAS shooters like Starline brass because it's thicker and will stand up to a lot of reloading. But fer BP I tend to prefer Winchester Brass because it's thinner and obturates better at BP pressures. This seals the chambers better and keeps fouling to a minimum by helping prevent some blowby in the chambers.

I also like Starline. It has done me fine and see no reason to switch. It is thick and will take some reloading.

I'm a 45 shooter and I thought that thinner brass would expand more to seal the breach better leaving me with less blow by and a cleaner action. Am I going the wrong way with this?

I haven't actually micced it but the general consensus is that Winchester is the thinnest. My shooting experiences indicate that this is so. Winchester brass seems to give me least amount of blowback in my guns.

:-D I have a collection of remington, winchester, starline, pmc, hornady, black hills and a couple of others I've never heard of. They've all been loaded six times I can account for, some maybe a coulple of more. I occasionally have a split case, and it doesen't seem to happen with any brand more than others. Maybe after another six or eight loadings I can tell ya more.
