Demand for guns in Colorado jumps in wake of movie massacre  Published July 24, 2012
FoxNews.com      Colorado gun stores are seeing a big jump in demand for firearms since last Friday's massacre at a midnight movie showing in Aurora.
Background checks for people wanting to buy guns in Colorado reportedly increased more than 41 percent after last week’s Aurora movie massacre. The Denver Post reports that firearm instructors have also seen increased interest in training needed for a concealed-carry permit.
"It's been insane," Jake Meyers, an employee at Rocky Mountain Guns and Ammo in Parker told the newspaper Monday.
Between Friday and Sunday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm — a 43 percent increase over the previous Friday through Sunday and a 39 percent jump over those same days on the first weekend of July.
The biggest spike was on Friday, when there were 1,216 checks, a 43 percent increase over the average number for the previous two Fridays.
On Friday morning, just hours after alleged 24-year-old gunman James Holmes killed 12 and injured 58 others at the Century Aurora theater, up to 20 people were already waiting outside the store when Meyers arrived, he said.
He said the day was “probably the busiest Monday all year” and said basic firearms classes that he and the store’s owner conduct are booked for the next three weeks — a first for this year, the newspaper reports.
"A lot of it is people saying, 'I didn't think I needed a gun, but now I do,' " he told the newspaper. "When it happens in your backyard, people start reassessing — 'Hey, I go to the movies.'"

Normal human reaction. A problem happened, let me go make sure I'm okay. In this case, anyone with a brain cell knows, that if you want to protect yourself, you have to do it for yourself. Getting shot or robbed and then calling the police is not very proactive.

Isn't that the truth.

I would also hope that if many of these people are first time buyers of a handgun, they get training and practice with the firearm, before they start carrying it. I have seen some people carrying a handgun, and I wonder how they have not shot themselves. I saw one lady once that was carrying a 9mm and didn't know she had to rack the slide to chamber a round. She thought she could just shove the magazine in and she was good to go.

Two anti-gun entities have been responsible for a huge amount of gun sales and those are the Dumycrat Party and the lame stream news media.  If they had any sense at all, they would realize that they, more than any other factor have participated in most of the very thing they abhor--the proliferation of guns in America.

I bought most of mine under the Clinton administration and I'm sure a lot of others did too.  My guess is that gun sales under Obama might be record breaking.

Do you happen to know how many guns there are in the US in private hands? It seems like we've got a compounding effect with these big spurts of gun buying. I remember there were something like 120 million of them in an old FBI estimate. It's got to be much more than that now. Not a bad thing. Especially when you consider that with so many guns in private hands, there are relatively few problems realated to them.

The numbers I have seen put the household number in the 70 to 80 million have at least 1 gun. I think the total number of guns in private ownership is well into the 100s of millions. I've got nearly 50 and everyone I know that owns guns owns more than 1. I'm sure its a big number.

One can only hope the number is high  ;D  but many may not admit to owning guns . And records of sales may only go back to when forms were required.

This   is   more   of  a   reaction  to   possible   gun   bans ,than  for   threat  to  ones   safety.

I pretty much agree with this. Not many people are going out to buy a gun for protection. I think they are existing gun owners scared a ban is going into effect. There may be some people who contemplated buying a gun and for same reason are accelerating their purchase.

I don't know what the numbers are, but I have seen a noteworthy number of cases where an event like this does trigger the purchase of a gun for personal safety. Typical is the guy who takes it as a cue to do something he has felt he should be doing. Sadly a lot of these cases seem to be people who make the gesture of buying a gun, but then not taking the step of learning to use it properly, or at least don't learn to treat it with the care it requires in terms of safety, muzzle control etc.

Then there are the ones who seem to buy a gun just to keep up with peers or perceived trends. They get the equipment, but again don't learn to use it.

Then you get the relatively few who get a gun and try it out, then fall in love with shooting and you see them at the range regularly.
