Looking for a Cannon, advise needed
« on: July 24, 2012, 10:25:29 AM »

Hi,

I recently purchased a small cannon and love it so i'm looking for something bigger. I'm new to the hobbie so need some advise. The photo was one I was gonna purchase but read some bad reviews so decided against it. What I am looking for is a cannon with a .69 to 1" bore, about 24" long, I like the naval, 24 and 32 PDR style. I've been on looking at the Brooks site but wanted something a little bigger than what they offer. My budget is $1000.00. I would prefer a field carriage but if not I can make a naval carriage. Below are some links of what I have been looking at and any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance Tino

Go with a sponsor.  At least you know what you are getting.

Hi Onit.  The CannonMikes replica looks pretty nice but the pictures aren't that clear. The one on gunbroker looks like a pretty strong carriage with nice wheels but its a lot smaller than it looks in the picture. The price seems OK but its not my thing.

Graystar has very affordable cannon barrels but im not a fan of cast iron at all.

I would use one of the sponsors on this forum and if you can get a 24 or 32 Pounder in the size you want on a Duel Trail Prairie carriage for a thousand bucks you would be getting a good deal. Good luck and I hope someone on hear can help you.

Either barrel will cost you $400 . They are also available in GB cal. The Parrot is also available on a steel carriage for $500 plus shipping . I am busy with a full time job at the moment so I won't even speculate on a ship date . Armorer77

Also , here is an example of the carriage work available .

+1 for armorer77.  I bought an 1841 Golf Ball barrel from armorer77 and am very pleased with his service, workmanship and the function of his barrel.   The cannon does make some noise though.  When I shoot the cannon, my furthest neighbor at the end of the street (some 300+ yards away with many houses between) is startled by the noise when he is inside his house.  It gives a very good low, chest thumping boom.  The attached video does not do it justice.  I don't have any other cannons so I can't say it is better or worse than any others but I can say I am a very pleased customer.
