Cutting the magazine tube spring and follower down??
« on: January 01, 2004, 08:28:48 AM »
¿I have a Marlin 1894CS with an 18½ inch barrel.  Can I cut the spring and follower down so I can get that 10th round in?

Thanks,
Cheyenne

I wish I knew. But there is only one way to find out. Try it. If it works great. If not then you'll have to replace both of the parts.

The 1911 45ACP magazines normally hold 7 rounds. Someone came up with the idea of modifying the spring to hold 8.

You can have a spring specially treated or a special spring made. If it works you can have a large batch of springs made and sell them. There might be a market for it. If it works for your Marlin it should work for Winchester's and Rossi's.

You might be on to something. If you come out with a special spring, patent it.

Cheyenne, how do you put the upside down question mark in?

I thought of cut and paste. But how do you do it from the start? I know that in Spanish when you use a question mark or exclamation they are put upside down in front of the sentence. There is a way to use the keyboard for this. But I don't know how!

why do you explicitly mention the marlin? :)
I am still convinced Win won't make anything below standard, and most probably I'll go for a Win to prove y'all wrong ;)
This weekend, I'm gonna order me a Win Trapper...
Don't worry, either way, I'll write a detailed consumer's report.
(read that as: if anything goes wrong, i'll post it up...)

"¿I have a Marlin 1894CS with an 18½ inch barrel.  Can I cut the spring and follower down so I can get that 10th round in?"

I routinely shorten the springs of Winchester, Marlin and Rossi lever guns so they have 4" sticking out the end.  Never had a feeding problem with them so altered.  I can always get that last round in then (7 cartridges in the M94 carbine in 30-30).  Never modified or shortened a follower so's I can't comment on that.
