Please analyze my trigger pull data

I've harvested every deer I've ever taken with the same NEF 270.  I've had it over 15 years, so last year I thought I would set me up a 308 and retire the 'ole 270.  I got me a 308 and fit it with a Leupold VX-1 and a black synthetic stock.  I shot about 6 shots sighting it in and I was good to go.
 
I missed the first deer I've ever missed with this gun.  I chocked it up to the long distance neck shot I took.  Then on the last day of the season I missed the second deer I've ever missed with this gun.  I knew right away I missed it because I felt myself flinch and pull the shot.
 
So I ordered me a Wheeler Trigger Pull scale (http://www.amazon.com/Wheeler-309888-Trigger-Pull-Scale/dp/B004E4CZE2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328315519&sr=8-1).

Note the 308 trigger pull is 8.5 pounds.
 
What are your thoughts?  What would you do?
 
Well, at least I can say that my 270 and still harvested every deer I've taken.

Your 270 Win is at 6.5 pounds so that doesn't qualify as a light trigger either.   You have some options on your trigger and they are in the FAQs sticky.  You can do your own trigger job, pay a gunsmith to do it for you or I believe you can return your receiver to H&R and have them do it.  H&R has a policy on min. trigger pull but it is a lot lower than 8.5 pounds.  If it were my rifle I would head back to the range and see if maybe something else happen, something loose or broken maybe.

 rest conditions, scope and other things.

I tried the graphite trick on my new 45-70 Talo Trapper, it averaged 6¾lb out of the box, after using the graphite(thanks Lonnie!! ) pull was just over 4lbs.

Just knock out the bottom 2 pins of the trigger group, make a slave pin.  Polish pins (600grit), clean hammer and trigger group.  Add about 25% powdered moly to Super Lube, use toothpick and lube everything well.  Don't hone on the trigger............it ought to bring you around 3lbs.

I decided to call H&R just to see what they'd say.  Turns out I didn't wait any time to get service and the woman was very helpful.  She emailed everything I need to send the rifle back and said they would set it to 3.5 to 4 pounds.
 
Problem is, I forget to ask if I needed to send the entire gun (stock set and barrel), or can I just send the receiver?
 
Any experience?

Not sure why I didn't update this, but just in case anyone was wondering, the gun came back with a 5.25 pound trigger pull.

If it is crisp without creep, I could live with it at 5.25 pounds. However I much prefer a crisp 3 pound trigger for my hunting guns and 2 pounds or so for my varmint guns. I like to squeeeze them off, nice and easy.

Keep us informed with how it shoots and any hunting stories. We love hunting stories here.

BTW - Trigger time is your friend, enough of it and you will be able to put a shot any where you want it or know exactly why you did not.
