38spcl/357 loads for predator hunting?
« on: October 13, 2012, 11:59:18 AM »
I am looking for some suggestions for bullet weights, and designs in factory loads for hunting fox, bobcat, and coyote sized game within 50 yards or less. Would like do as little pelt damage as possible if possible. I've got a M92 Rossi 16" rifle, and a Rossi 4" revolver that I wanted to hunt with.
Thanks for any advice!

I'd use a "plinker" load to avoid pelt damage.  I load up .38 specials with 3 gr. Unique under a 158 gr. Ranier Round nose.  Punches straight through without a lot of damage on smaller game/pelt game.

Would the round nose bullets be safe to load in my lever gun as well? I've got some 38spcl Federal American Eagle 158gr LRN's on hand that's rated at 770fps. Do you think these would be to hard on the pelts? Other wise I'll have to order bullets and gas checks.
Thanks again!

I would use the 130 gr FMJ loads either hand loaded or factory loads. Some say these were developed to go with the mod 12 S&W that were carried by chopper drivers in VN. seems the revolver was not a good idea the alum frame cracked and the bullet was everything but a man stopper. That said they might slide thru. a critter putting it's lights out with out alot of pelt damage since they don't expand. I use them for pratice since a box are often very cheap. you can dig bullets out of the berm with little or no damage.

The Ranier are basically FMJ for all intents except typically a little cheaper.  FMJ's will do the same thing though too.  ;)   They don't really expand at all, but you do get some obturation in a pistol, which can help accuracy in revolvers.  In your lever gun they will be fine, albeit they do have a flat point version if it'd make you feel better.  ;)  This was just the ones I'm using.  8)
