It's Not My Job, Man.
« on: August 02, 2012, 01:52:58 PM »
This is a story about 4 people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

That's an oldie but goodie, and worth taking to heart and teaching. We see stuff like this happening every day. It's also a good way to distinguish yourself, by being diligent enough to take care of things that need taking care of.

I figured it probably was an oldie, but for some reason I hadn't heard it before.

I have seen this point played out in the workplace far too often; when ask about it, the workers usually respond with the title that I used.

We had that posted at work for years.  The only thing I could add is that at times we oldtimers should help "somebody: with our experience and knowledge instead of letting chips fall as they may.  I have found though, that on some tasks the better way is to let the newbie make a mistake and have to fix it, unless it costs "me" too much time or company money.
