I gave up hunting in Canada when border crossing from NYS became a hassle;  At least that was my attitude at the time.  How much hassle is it nowadays, regarding paperwork, $$$, and time?

Depends on what you take and why.
Personal protection is not a reason.
Hunting is.
 
You will probably need to show a license and some sort of letter from the outfitter as most Provinces require you to have one for big game.
All rifles and shotguns will need to be of the type that is considered Non- restricted in Canada.
There is a registration process and fee at the border.
 
There is up to date info on the internet.

It isn't all one sided either. I need to apply to ATF with a Form to bring a firearm into the USA. Either for a Shooting Competition or to hunt.
The Form in duplicate needs to be mailed to Virginia, expect a turn around for 6 weeks to 8 weeks.
Plus the original valid hunting license from any State.
On this Form are these questions  personal Info.
 
Type of firearm, model, caliber and Mfg.name and location
Serial # of the firearm
Canadian Registration No.( this may be changed now since Canada no longer requires it)
Firearm Permit( A Canadian Federal requirement to own a firearm)
Ammo amount, type, amount and Mfg name and location.
At the Border I am required to report the fact of entering the USA with a Firearm. The Border Agency will endore the Form that I have reported the Firearm. 
 
Once you have the approval the Document is valid for One year.

That's what I remembered.  Too bad;  That's just the way it is.  I gave up moose hunting in PQ for just those reasons plus I don't like being treated like a terrorist.  If i were desperate for another moose I guess I would go through that but I'm not.

It would be interesting to read what hunters going to Africa,EU, Mexico,NZ and other SA countries have to go through to get their firearms into them.
