Buying first crossbow
« on: July 14, 2012, 09:00:47 AM »
Bass Pro has the Wicked Ridge Invader HP package for $550 plus tax.  I can buy the same thing on EBAY for $465 including shipping.

Are the crossbows tricky to put together if I buy one online?

Is this a pretty good crossbow?  I'll only use it to hunt?

I need your opinions.  Thanks.

Typically the limbs are attached to the stock with only one or two bolts - no rocket science here.

Wicked Ridge is a fairly new line of bows.  You should find out about the terms of the Warranty before purchase.

Parker line up of crossbows are made in USA with lifetime warranty.  Suggest consider Tomahawk Outfitter - eBay 160762275801.

Good hunting to you.

I don't know what kind of a bow this is. I would stay away from the compound versions.

I would highly recomend the Parkers they are based out of Virginia and they have great customer service. I have had  couple of their crossbows and my father and a coworker has one and all have shot and performed excellent.

I have that exact crossbow and its been great. putting it together took all of about 5 minutes and they even come with a redot that is bore sighted. I put mine together put a couple broadheads on arrows and it shot dead center at 25 yards right out of the box. It replaced a barrnette that was a total pos. In my opinion you wont find more of a cross bow if you spend even 200 dollars more. I dont usually hunt the early bow season because im doing crop damage shooting then. Only problem with the wicked ridge is my father also has a barnette and after shooting my wr he wanted to borrow it. Hes used it two seasons now and loves it. My problem is usually getting it back from him for the late season.

I saw a Parker Tomahawk today and liked it.   I thought it fit me a lot better than the Wicked Ridge.

I have the WR invader and its very accurate, my buddy shot mine and went and got his own. The only thing I didn't care for is the red dot so I changed it out for a vortex crossbow scope. This place is were my buddy got his and it came with the better scope and arrows for a better price then I paid,

It's a good idea to read reviews on the ones you are looking at. Some crossbows have a very nasty trigger on them so that's something to focus on.
I like the Excalibur brand. Mine was just a used one off of craigslist. The reason I went with it is that the compounds are louder. With the string and limb silencers the excalibur is scary quiet when shot. Many times I have had a group of deer look at the shot one like it was nuts when it took off running. Just standing there watching it. Sometimes they just go back to eating the acorns or whatever they were doing before it bolted out after 30 seconds or so of looking around. Back when I used a compound regular bow with the same silencers, there was never one that stayed behind. They all heard the whack and followed suit of the one running off.

I've never found the sound of string slap to affect my hunting.   These two deer were taken with moments of each other.

I have been cross bow hunting for over 20 years. Two of the best bows I owned were Horton. Two and half years ago I purchased a Parker Tornado, biggest mistake. I am conscience about cleaning and maintaining my hunting equipment. Made sure string was waxed, and cables looked good, limbs seemed to be good as well. Then I went out and started to place three bolts on target, fourth bolt in, and WHAM, the string snapped, cables went flying.  Now I have a crossbow in several pieces. I had problems with the trigger assembly originally, should have been a clue.  I spoke with Parker reps at the deer & Turkey expo last year, and they were not that friendly. Basically told me to deal with things on-line.

IMO Horton and ten point and Excalibur make some good cross bows. That what my hunting buddies use. As for me, I  ordered a Horton.

I did the exact same thing. there a pretty nice scope for the money. I would have liked to pick up another but they were sold out. I thought it might make a great 22 scope.
