7 BR Encore - Factory Ammo?
« on: February 03, 2004, 08:56:18 AM »
I have been thinking about picking up a 10" factory 7 BR Encore barrel but am undecided at the moment.  I was certain that there was factory ammo available for this cartridge but have been unable to find any listed on the net - does anyone know if there is factory ammo available and if so where to get it?

If anyone out there is shooting a 10" 7 BR Encore I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this set up - does it group well?  Open sights or scope?  I am thinking this would be a low recoil compact set up for deer and varmits - something relatively easy to carry on my person and in my vehicle.

Biggun:

I don't think Remington offers factory ammo in this caliber anymore.

My Encore has a 15" barrel which includes a recoil tamer. I use a red dot sight and like to hold the handgun "rifle style", so the lower recoil keeps the hammer supr from hitting me in the choppers.

The 7mm BR is a very precise cartridge, and I get sub-MOA groups with max. load of IMR4895. I used a weaver K-4 scope shooting out of sand bags to develop the load. I hope this helps.

I couldn't find it on their on-line catalog.  Somebody somewhere probably has a few boxes behind the counter.

Howdy Biggun :D

I believe that formed brass is available, might try Midsouth Shooters Supply.  I've been shooting this cartridge since it was released in the XP-100 and I had to form my own cases from special 308 brass (remington basic) It was a lot of work and the yield was only fair, loss a lot of brass while learning.  I still have the form dies but don't use them anymore now that brass is available.  Great cartridge, very accurate.  I've thought of getting a carbine barrel for my Encore, will have to wait for the budget to get in better shape.  Still I love my XP's in that caliber.

Checking Remington's web site it appears that loaded ammo is not available, which makes it a handloaders only cartridge.

Good luck

The only encore barrel I own at the moment is a 10 3/4" 7mm BR that was made by the TC Custom shop.  I have it topped with a Leupold 4x scope.  It will shoot a cloverleaf at 50 yards and about an inch at 100 yards.  Actually I'm sure it will do better as I am a novice encore pistol shooter (still getting used to that extended eye relief).  I haven't found any retailer that is carrying ready to shoot ammo, but I haven't had any trouble finding the components to reload.  Recently, I bought brass from Mid South.  It is definately mild recoiling, about like a .38.  I haven't chrono'd mine yet but I don't think 2000-2400 fps will be a problem depending on bullet and powder combinations.  Mine is set up strictly for white tails.  Will test early in the 2004 season.

Good Luck,

Smoky
