July 12th computer virus
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:55:05 AM »
I know most of you have heard the news reports that the FBI has quarantined a virus, and on the 12th will block any computer that may carry it.

I'm wary of this, as the website they give you to scan your computer is one selected by the FBI.  Sorry, but I don't trust the government.

What if anything are you guys doing about this?

This was the first time I heard of this, so I did a little research.

Here's a link to a PC World write-up on the virus:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/254279/fbi_steps_up_internet_doomsday_awareness_malware_campaign.html

There is a link in the article to do a basic check to see if your computer has the virus.  It doesn't download anything, just checks the integrity of your link to your ISP.  I clicked it, and the check takes all of about 1 second:

http://www.dns-ok.us/
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Couple of quick things - the cut off date is actually July 9 (this Monday), and if you go to Google's home page and do a search it will tell you at the top of the page if you are affected.  As hardertr said, the check at http://www.dns-ok.us/ doesn't download or scan anything, but if you are still worried you can also go to http://www.dcwg.org/detect/ and scroll to the bottom for a way to manually check to see if you are affected.

Don't know why you'd say that, it was real, and had it not been for some folks stepping up to prevent it, it could have been a big deal for hundreds of thousands of people.

Or maybe now it really IS a problem for millions who went to the site the FBI was trying to get ya to go to. You trust the government more than I do if you went there.

well i know that there was no way i was going to an FBI website.
i do not understand how the FBI was going to "fix" my computer that way.
after all the DNS shift trojan virus ( really a redirection program ) was on the servers not my pc.
the logic didnt make much sense to me and guess what.. it didnt for about 85% of the online popluation either
like i said, never mind i mentioned it
