What does hern iron works packaging look like?
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:05:52 AM »
Estes express lines has lost my cannon barrel.  There is a good chance it is sitting on their dock right now but w/out paperwork.  They are looking for it but want to have an idea what herns packaging looks like because apparently its not just a cannon barrel sitting on a skid.

Hern is closed and cant get ahold of them at the moment so i come to you guys for help in the meantime.

do you know how much it weighs? and length? they should be able to narrow it down with those two factors....

I've sent and received, combined, hundreds of truck shipments.  The procedure to track your shipment has been the same across all carriers I've used, for decades.  The shipper gets the "pro" number from the driver when the shipment leaves; this is the same as the "tracking" number used in UPS, Fedex etc.  All shippers have websites, with one page for tracking.  Put your pro number in there and instantly it tells you where your load is, ETA etc.  If you are unfortunate as to be without a pro number, go back to shipper and get it. No competent business I know of would fail to keep the pro number of a shipment, at least until it reached its destination.

I have a pro number and the tracking shows the item here in indy, but its most definatly NOT  here in indy.... they are thinking its sitting on the dock w/out paperwork in kansas, but they dont know for sure, because that hub is closed for weather.

All truck lines we deal with want us to cover bare stuff, even cannon barrels, with cardboard or whatever, they don't want the contents visible or easily damaged when they stack stuff on it up to the top of the trailer.  So if you ask if anyone's seen a bare cannon barrel on a skid, it could be there, but hidden under cardboard.  The only way a shipment gets recorded as being at a certain place is for the Pro number tag to be scanned at that location.

Here's what you do. Wait a month to be nice while herns try's to figure out what went wrong. Then just let them know there time is up an have them ship another barrel out. The moving industry is full of criminals and stuff gets stolen.  Also it sucks really bad when stuff gets lost or stolen in the mail. Sorry to hear it but it might turn up one day.

It happens where things get scanned before they are loaded and then they forget to load it. So thats why its probably sitting on the dock back there.

A good loader will not scan an item until its on the truck. This way you cant mess up.

The shipper is really an extension of the sender and if you don't get the shipment, the sender should send another one after a reasonable wait for it to turn up.  When an insurance claim is paid, it is the sender who collects, not the recipient.  The recipient just gets another shipment.

supposedly it was delivered to the broker that hern used who has a home address out of an estes hub in california... when the paperwork got seperated that address was all that was left so it was sent there.... they claim i should have it midweek, and it should have arrived in kansas city yesterday, indy tomorrow, delivery on tuesday.  I am not holding my breath though as the "new" tracking number they gave me still does not work.  we will see by the end of the week.  Either way, wheels are ordered (42 inchers) wood is here, hardware on its way.  all i have left are implements, which i will think harder about later down the road (feel free to email me a quote for a worm, sponge, and rammer) its my username @gmail.com

Nice looking tools, Zulu!

Indy - though it doesn't appear to be the case for you, when I ordered 2 Hern 5/8 Carronades, they came nicely packed in custom 3/4" ply crates, but they are a bit smaller than yours.  Hope your barrel arrives soon!

I felt your pain at not knowing where your beloved was, but I always had a good feeling that she was going to turn up on your doorstep (eventually). Ha!
Glad to hear that it arrived safely, and please keep us up to date on the build.
