First ripe maters

I know some of you have already been canning maters for a while, but up here I'm looking at another 2-3 weeks.
 
But the wife and I did have our 1st BLT with a real tomato from the garden.  Ate another mater along with a cuke for lunch at work today.  This is a great time of year! Might have the same tomorrow for lunch.

My maters are real good size this year, but there aren't many of them per plant.  As I like to have a good supply canned I gotta pass on the greenies until the end of the season.

They're good, aren't they?  Down here near the Gulf of Mexico we had our first ripe ones in May.  Now they have quit.  They don't set fruit when it's hot at night, and the vines have died by now.  Some people have good luck with fall tomatoes, but I never have had them do very well.  Maybe somebody out there will share with us how to grow them late in the season.

Late season here means temps to -50 and a wee bit of snow.

LONGWINTERS. I'm getting plenty ripe ones to eat. Dang it, ya had ta mention BLTs. Now we got to buy some bacon next trip to town. Still having to water them ever few days. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

I'm partial to the thick sliced bacon myself.  :)   Tonight I am stewing tomatoes for canning.  I don't have that many plants and so have to accumulate over several days.  So my 1st batch will be aprox 5-6 quarts.

Wife and I visited Montecello (Thomas Jeffersons Estate) last fall and bought some heirloom seed from his garden varieties.  The three types we bought were all purple tomatoes.  Started the seeds this spring and moved the plants to our garden in late May.  Just now seeing mature tomatoes.  Slow to produce but fruit will be large.  A standard variety I like is called Pink Lady.  It seems to produce well into the fall after the others have become "tired".

Here in NW Ohio, getting my first large tomatoe's,Big Boys and Sonics. Have had cherry/grape mater's for a couple weeks. Had some rain a couple days ago, and some is suppose to get here tomorrow. So am hoping they really turn on in the next couple weeks to get some canned. gypsyman

Still waiting in south western NY State...sigh   I got my garden in about a week late...tiller was broke.  Radishes are past, zuchini going nuts & peppers in gear..but no ripe maters yet.

A good summer for a garden here in Northern Idaho.  We are eating tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, beans, new potatoes, jalapenos, carrots, and beets.  Just picked my first yellow crook-necked squash yesterday, but have dozens of smaller ones on the plants.  I have tons of green tomatoes and they get ripe a handful at a time, just right.  The corn will be ready by mid September, and we'll dig the mature potatoes in early October.  We harvested all of our garlic in mid July and I'm preparing the soil for planting more in mid October.  The asparagus was good and tasty in the early summer and has now produced large ferns to build the roots for next year.  I expected the onions to be ready by now, but the stems haven't fallen over yet and they are still getting bigger.
I hope everyone out there enjoys having a garden as much as I do.  The produce is worth all the work.

Well so far I've canned 32 qts of tomatoes so things are going ok so far.  We have also enjoyed cukes, green beans, carrots, zuchini, onions and some asparagus.  Also raspberries and blueberries.  It s a great time of year.

I only planted 4 roma tomato vines. Last Monday I got 6 pounds of ripe ones which only translated into a quart of tomato sauce.

I've thought about growing Roma's but when I looked at how many plants I would need to put up 50-60 qts...well......
