To say that the attack on PH was un provoked is somewhat misleading.
quite true, but saying so might get you called a librul, or a comm'ninist, or even a Muslim....
I doubt that . I am American and back my country 100% . I support our Consitution and Bill of rights along with all laws that are legal. I have no problem with doing what ever is nessary to protect America and Americans and our intrest. I also like to see the reason for why things happen. No doubt we bring on attacks . We make the mistake that given the opertunity all people of the world would want to be like us when they do not. When you consider the goals of leaders from the forest of Germany  to England to America to Asia a path of conqure by whites who belived it was their right to rule the world it is not hard to understand our goals and goals of others do not always mesh well.
Only when all Americans look at the reason for these attacks on us and  understand will we begin to really be a super power as we should. Since I have been alive I have seen Americans led into war / police action and conflict around the world . Often the reason given to motivate us to fighting was a bald face lie only to be exposed and chip away at our integrity taking with it support for or govt. and often out troops ( something that should never happen ). Only by exposing the past can we learn to see the truth in the future. If we must go to war pray it is for a just cause . If it is a just cause pray we will win it in a short a time as possible with as few American deaths or injurys as possible and that we leave our attacker in a position where they will not be able to mount another attack for generations if ever .
So to say PH was un provoked is not true . To say what provoked PH was not a justifyed reaction for what had happened before PH would be a true statement and one I believe most Americans could support and justify our entering WW2 because of. A war BTW that was supported to the end .
I guess if that is a liberal in someones mind they need to rethink their definition  , I know I'm no liberal - hey I would have read the Obama HCA before voting on it  ;) .

Some of you don't understand the "A" bomb outside of bang.
The radiation was known by both/all sides (scientist, i'm talkin about)--it was the military who wanted the bang.
The dirty bomb is at least as effective as the Bang Bomb---it was the delivery to the target needed that was the obsticle.
The US had proved that they could keep supplying---study logistics 101---men and material. There was a need to stop production and kill Americans. The Japanese had some serious virus's, they just couldn't get them to the target---same for Germany and the dirty bomb.
You cannot use the "A" bomb on territory you wish to occupy----well, at least for a few years---or invade or where YOUR people live.
The military minds could not understand the after effects--well nobody outside the makers knew the dangers fully--and they really didn't either. Things like this have to be tried out and then say--"OOPS", better rethink this.
We had Japan with their backs to the wall and could have starved them into submission in a year or two----The Russians made the seige tactic a plan that would not work.
We had the capability to produce the bomb in quantities enough to do the work that needed quickly---NAW, we couldn't send a 100 planes with a hundred bombs at a time but we could have kept up a steady supply.
PH--was--depending on the side you were on--a forced outcome---unless Japan wanted to stop a war.
Folks, you have to consider that others think the same way we do--they push and you push back---sooner or later push comes to shove and, weelll, PH or whatever.
It was a logical thing for the Japanese to do in the circumstances. You may not like it--but--let me tell you one thing I have learned---YOU do not want to be the second person to swing--------IT almost worked for the Japanese.
They also made some glareing errors in logistics.
You can talk about courage and spirit all you want but logistics WIN wars. Try playing a football game without a football.
Blessings

Their big mistake was becoming a Hitler good-bud.  That man really did threaten our way of life.

Good Grief,  Did he have Carriers, landing craft and four engine long rage bombers all ready to invade the USA???

They did have a long range aircraft, and if England hadn't been in the way we might have gotten a taste of it.  In a larger sense, having to live with a Nazi Europe would have changed the US, and not for the better.  It may have just driven us down the same road we followed, but much faster.

The Red Army vastly outgunned the Kwantung army, just chewed it up.  What siege are you thinking of with the Russians?

I can't think of anything the Japanese could have done after 7 Dec 41 that would have won the war for them... we could have lost it, but they didn't have the means to win it.

Here's a superb write-up on disparity of war-making capability between US & Japan during WW2:

Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

I read that.  Today with our industry stripped and moved overseas, it would take us a long time to rebuild our manufacturing capabilities.  Most textiles are gone, as well as most shoe manufacturing.  Steel production is way way down.  Mining, oil drilling, etc is way down.  Auto production isn't what it was, most foreign owned now.  Tire production is mostly foreign owned.  We need to take our country back.

Well, my hands would tire from signing exeucative orders getting things back in order.  We do need to be pragmatic, and do whatever we need to do to get our manufacturing base back.  I think one quick way is for ALL federal, state and local governmental purchases be of American made products.  If there are no American made, then give them 5 years to get a factory built here to make it here.  Government buys a lot of stuff.  Uniforms, shoes, vehicles, weapons, office machines, desks, chairs, fuel (natural gas would be a good start and compromise with environmentalists), tools, steel for ships, tanks, and weapons, computers, computer chips, the list can go on and on.  This would keep a lot of industry at home in case of some future problem with suppliers overseas.  Nothing but bananas, cocoa, coffee, tea, and Brazil nuts should be imported, all of which we can do without in a pinch.

We were tired of war, we won in Europe, we wanted Japan to surrender quick.  Truman wanted to end it quick.  Between the two bombs, and Russia, Japan finally knew it was over and spared their people.

YT
It was a political imperitive that Japan be kept clear of Communism and be reconstructed without outside interference from any nation.
It worked-!
Now if we had allowed the seige tactics to end the war, Russia would have been involved with reconstruction---may have even invade without assistance as they cred not how many people they lost.
The Russians in Japan could have started  WWIII right on top of WWII---almost did in Europe.
Now I am not argueing--one way or the other if we should have let Patton go---there are a lot of folks who--without thinking thru tis situation--say we should have. That is another discussion for another thread.
America wanted the war OVER--Americans/GI's--it was not an age when poiticians just did what they wanted to do---that was soon to come as we now see.
Then there was Communist China--in this whole affair.
Lots more to this than just defeating Japan.
Blessings

As I read over the statements about what happened and why along with what had to happen I wonder which ones were concived after the fact. The USA was in a desperate fight that had to see an end . They did what had to be done with the lest life loss on the American side . It was what they thought was the right thing to do . Who are we to sit around second guessing and making up facts to support our ideas ? God help us if a crisis comes up today .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
