Is there such a tool...
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:43:46 PM »
as on the order of a giant pencil sharpener which will cut square stock into round stock but without the point.  I want to make some stools but want to speed up the process of making legs and supports.

Thanks in advance.

A tenon cutter.  Now why didn't I just say so.  I knew that but forgot it.  Evidently I forgot it for a long time though because I didn't remember how much they cost. Most are priced around $100 except for the really good ones.  I'll likely spring for a 1" and a 2" though.  We'll see.  Thanks again for the reminders and the help.

Hello Alan,
Try looking up woodworking sights that have cane or walking stick supplies.  Tenon cutter is the right name.

I have seen home made jigs on utube to turn arrow shafts from square stock. Could do something similar if you have a router.

Alan,
Those things are real expensive.  I made the stuff below a different way.  Let me try to explain.

I clamped the piece I wanted to cut vertically in my drill press.  I used a hole saw to cut as deep as it would go before it bottomed out.  Then I took the piece to my band saw and cut away everything outside of the cut.  It left a very nice 2" tenon or 1 1/2" or whatever size hole saw I used.
Just a cheap easy way to do it.

Hole saw are much cheaper than tenon cutters.  Thanks for the idea. I actually had the Rockler page up right now trying to force myself to click on spending $200+ on what amounts to a couple of drill bits.

Alan,
I've seen them and I want them too.  Just way to much money.  My way works great for me.

FPH, I know nothing of lathe work. Could you chuck the legs for the stools in the op to get the end angle you wanted? ear

& error 30 years ago in the Construction firms cabinet shop on weekends.

ear,
I won't tell you it would be impossible to do the stool legs on a lathe but it would be really, really hard.  Those legs are small logs and everyone is different so you couldn't even make some kind of jig.
If you had the time and a sharp knife I guess you could carve them but it would take a while. :-X

You won't believe how fast a sharp knife made for the lathe will turn a leg.

FPH,
I believe you.  I do a great deal of woodturning.
Have a look at my website.  There is a whole lot to see there.

Well, Alan in his ADD exuberance went out and bought a brand new 1 1/2 inch hole saw and while he was down at the lumber yard decided to get a brand new 1 1/2 inch spade bit to make sure that the holes were perfect. Got home and chucked up that hole saw and made the purtiest tenon you ever saw.  Then I drilled a hole with that new bit and realized.....

Hole saw OD is 1 1/2 inch and ID is not.

Oh well, It still worked perfectly, I just gotta get the sizes right.  You gotta drill your hole to match the ID on the hole saw.

Use Forstner Bits in a drill press for the blind holes.
The set of vintage ones I made were out of Dogwood and were a cross between a giant die tapping handle and a pencil sharpener.
