Makes sense. :)
Are dies included with the rebore or are they available?
Should make for a very versatile big game cartridge.
Keep us in the loop with this one... it's interesting for sure.

Jason, Midsouth has a heck of a buy on primed 405 Win Roosevelt nickle brass, if it's not too late to change your mind!  ;D  I bought a bag, it looks like any other new brass, I couldn't find any significant blemishes that new brass doesn't normally have.

The 405 Win will do 2500fps with 300gr bullets in the 28" barrel, so the 405 JES will likely lag a bit behind due to the smaller 444 Marlin case, 405 Win case capacity is 73.8gr compared to 67.2gr for the 444.

Here'e a discussion with case drawing of the 405 JES at MO, apparently will push 300gr bullets 2000fps in a levergun.

are the 38-55 barrels getting rare? if its goin to be re bored wouldn't it be better to just use a 30-06 or 270 or 243 barrel? i thought some people were having trouble finding the 38-55? seems like you might be better off making a trade first?

The 38-55TM and 45-70 BC are the only Handi options if you want a 28" barrel.  I think a 405 Big Medicine (either the 405JES or the real McCoy 405Win) with a 28" barrel would trump a 38-55 anyday.  Ya'll can apply tar and feathers at your leisure. ::)   I hope gcrank1 doesn't read this. ;D

I'm with ya on this one BB. I'd MUCH rather have a 405 than a 38-55. If it was good enough for 'ol Teddy it's good enough for me. ;)

Well BB........... :o
As much as I like my two 38-55s, it is just a puny little cartridge, isnt it.
Would the rather plentiful 26" 25-06 barrel work for this or be too skinny to bore that big? Those 2" wont make much diff in performance if it would work. The one thing I can say for sure about using the 38-55 barrel it it will certainly take care of the original chambering often tight neck situation, but it would be a pure shame to do it to one that has the right neck dimensions!
Just keep using up those 38-55 barrels, it will make mine more 'valuable'  ;) .

From my reading about paper patched bullets, I've come to suspect the tight 38-55 chamber is historically correct for old style paper patched bullets, just under bore size soft lead bullet with the patching bring it up to bore size.

I shoot 300 gr. cast bullets out of my 444P and get 1950 fps. And a healthy whack on the shoulder too.
