recommendations for whitetail hunts
« on: July 27, 2012, 03:08:59 AM »
  Hello to all,

  The last couple of years I have been contemplating hunting Whitetail deer, my home state of Utah does not have any (or a huntable population of any) and I've never shot a whitetail deer.

  Since this would be a first time thing and I would be traveling out of state, I thought I should ask here,

 Do any of you have recommendations for where to go, or what outfitter/guide service to goto for hunting whitetail?

 Where or who would be the best to get the most bang for my buck (literally) who offers the best chance of success, or the best opportunity for the lowest price?

  Like Mule deer hunting here, most of you'all hunt in your own backyards, farms and personal necks of the woods, but what I'm asking for is probably a ranch or outfitter recomendation for the first time whitetail hunter without the connections or an in to hunt whitetail on a "do it yourself" type of hunt.

  Recommendations anyone?

   Thanks in advance, Rvtrav

  I assume you are not interested in 'hunting' fenced deer.  For instance, there is some great wild whitetail hunting along the the New York/Pennsylvania border...but that is far from you.
    I understand there are some fine whitetails in Iowa farm country; big, corn fed guys.  I just Googled > Iowa whitetail outfitters < and got this site along with many others.  http://www.ruttinandstruttinoutfitters.com/

  Perhaps somebody can reccomend one, or perhaps some Iowa farmer on GBO might invite you..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

  Not a bad idea..perhaps Graybeard can set up a forum called "swap-a-hunt". Someone who for instance, has land or access to land for reasonable or free muley hunting in Montana or anteope hunting in Wyoming; can swap that acccess for a whitetail hunt in Iowa or a hog hunt in the Carolinas.

  BTW: If you have such land....don't forget our "wounded warriors".. here's an example (not an endorsement);

 Do you have any hunters in the list of relatives & friends? Landowners? Someone to lean from would speed things up a bunch. Other than that I'd be looking for public land not real far from home, read up on the regs  do it safely.

  You can lean a lot by going out after small game or birds, less people around too. UT must have a lot to offer. I'd start checking maps for public land & hunting regulations.
