20 gauge ladies slug gun
« on: January 07, 2004, 11:51:54 AM »
I am looking for some guidance in getting a slug gun for my girlfriend. She has been hunting for several years now, and has done quite well using my 1100 Special Field with clamp on sights. The gun, though, is too long for her, and I don't want to see it scarred from getting in and out of tree stands all the time.
I would like her to have a minature version of my 11-87 with rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount. My research shows that no one makes a youth/ladies model in that configuration. Is this correct?
Assuming no one does make one, what would be the easiest and cheapest way to build one? I am guessing that I could look for an 1100 youth model and buy a slug barrel with mount. Does anyone make one for the 20? Or do you have any other suggestions? I have not had good luck with drilling/tapping shot guns or with using saddle mounts, and I do want her to have a semi-auto to hold down recoil.
Thanks, Will

Will-C:

I had the same problem since I hunt with four different females and only one male.  My solution was to buy Remington youth 1100 Lt models and then buy Hastings slug barrels with Cantilever scope mounts.  The Hastings barrel is fully rifled and about two inches longer than the Remington barrel.  I added slings to all of the guns and they all shoot 5 saboted slugs into a four inch square at 100 yards.  I found Leupold 2 X scope for shot guns and put them on each of the guns.  If I where doing it again I would think about buying the youth model 1100's 3 inch mag for Turkeys and then putting on the Hastings barrel.  All of my ladies are turkey killers as well as deer hunters.  You could probably get by real well with putting a B-square mount on a youth model and shooting non saboted slugs from the smooth barrel and taking it off for every thing else.

Dragon; That's pretty much what I thought I would probably do. I can't see buying a new gun and chopping the stock, I'll keep my eyes open on the gun show circuit and see what I can find. No turkey for her, so I don't think we need a 3" gun. I have never had any luck with the B-square mount, although I could try another one on a smooth bore. It would be fine for her to shoot Foster slugs, that is what she is using now, and she hunts in a area where a 60 yard shot is all that is possible. Thanks for the thoughts.

I think you can get a rifled barrel for the 870 express mag 20 gauge. The gun is a lot smaller in length and the stock is shorter/smaller than my win 1200.All around good gun.

That is a thought, and she has picked one of the 870's up and shouldered it (fits real well), but I still would like to see a cantilevered barrel for scope mounting. I could talk to a gunsmith buddy and see if there is enough material on the top of the 870 receiver to drill/tap for a scope mount there. I know that my 11-87 did not have enough to get more than a couple of threads, and the mount would loosen up constantly.
Oh well, the search continues.
