Good red dot sight for deer hunting
« on: August 19, 2012, 11:57:46 AM »
I just bought a Taurus 66 .357 with 6" barrel to use for close range deer hunting.  I am looking for a small red dot sight to help me in low light conditions.  What moa dot should I get to allow shots to 50 yds?  Also, I really like the small size of the Burris Fast Fire sight, but not the price.  Does anyone have any experience with the Sightmark Mini Mark or other similar inexpensive tubeless sight?

My experience with the cheap dot sights has not been  good. Buy the Fastfire if you can afford it. I believe all the cheap ones are made in China and marked with different names. I'm on my 5th or 6th one on my plate gun (Mkll Ruger). This one has been on the gun for a little over a year. I like the circle/dot reticule. I believe it has a one minute dot in a nine minute circle. Easy to find quickly even in bright light and precise enough for tight shots. Don't know how it will hold up on the .357.

I have a couple Eotech EXPS-es and Aimpoint micros..... for hunting/home defense/plinking, I would put my Bushnell TRS-25 on par with all of them.  The TRS is likely not as sturdy, since it's not "battle proven", but it's a great little sight that can be found for under $80.
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

I've had really good luck with the Ultra Dot. Have had one on my 357 Max for about 5 years now.

Don't go larger than a 5 MOA dot. If your shots are in the 50 yard range it will cover a 2 1/2" spot on your target. Personally I prefer a 2 MOA or a cross in a red dot scope.

Me, I dislike all red dot scopes because they don't make one that I'm aware of that will not obscure a distant small target.  Sure, they work close up, and may be all you want on a handgun if you know ALL your shots are close encounters.  I like precise aiming ability at any distance.  Just me.

Most of us that hunt with handguns will never take a shot over 50 yards.  Even THAT is a long shot, but avoidable if you do your "homework".

Anything up to a 4 MOA is fine under 100 yards.

Not for me.  I want to hit what I shoot at, regardless of the distance.  Don't get me wrong.  I know a handgun is not a rifle.  But if one can't read is open sights on a handgun at extended ranges, then I agree, he needs some kind of glowing dot.

Thanks for all the replies.  I really prefer a smaller sight, so I guess I'll just save up for the Fast Fire.

As long as you're thinking about saving for a fast fire and that is an excellent red dot, you might want to look into the Leupold DeltaPoint red dot with the 7.5moa delta.  Using the delta point tip, as your aiming point, is about like having a 1/4 moa scope dot.  I find it much better than a dot for my uses.

It costs more and for some they feel it's not worth the extra expense to them.  The problem and additional cost will be your base to mount the red dot on unless you don't mind a high mount.  There's a few manuafactures out there that are starting to make low mounts that are both better looking on your revolver/pistol and easier to get on target quickly with.

The deltapoint can be purchased with a low-mount base set but I don't think any of the bases will fit a Taurus revolver.  Here's what the difference in mount height looks like on a Smith X-frame.

Another vote for the Ultra-Dot.  They are available in fixed and variable dot sizes (I like 4 inch), a little less $$ then the Fastfire.  They are as small as a tube type sight gets, and are very durable.  I have tried to kill mine, mounted on a Ruger .44 mag, for years with no success.  The Fastfire is also a good choice for a small, relatively inexpensive but durable holo type sight.  I have several of those on guns with some recoil, also without issue.
