Front sights on the 22" 45-70 Handi is screw mounted, you'd have to have the barrel drilled and tapped for remounting, that usually costs another $25 or so, most smiths charge per hole with a minimum charge for setup.

Instead of worrying about rings and scopes and such, why not use the rifle with the iron sights for a while?  Maybe get a Williams WGRS peep for the rear (you will probably need a higher front sight also).  It may be that you will like irons better than a scope anyway, and the rifle is a lot "handier" without that chunk of glass sitting on top.

Two people have already told me this after me ordering the scope and rings, starting to think I should have waited. But oh well. To me a 12x1" cylindrical tube on top of my Rifle doesn't make it any less Handi :D I plan on cutting the barrel a few inches anyhow. Besides, if I feel like I wont be using that day, I can always take it off the mount and put it back on later, right? Or does that throw off the zero?

My uncle who lives 4 hours away from me has been reloading for quite sometime now, doesnt shoot, but reloads with his buddy. I'll have to call him up ask him about it. I gotta buddy as well, who's father in law is into casting bullets and reloading his own shells....with apparently a BUNCH of spare equipment :)

It may or may not work, might be close tho. There's another problem with that scenario tho, the Ironsighter base is ~.130" taller than an H&R base at the center, some members have been able to use iron sights with the H&R base in place, others can't, the higher base may not allow the use of the sights at all without removing it and that will more than likely change POI when reinstalled.

So you're saying I would have to take the ironsighter base off to use the original open sights, which could then cause to throw the zero off?

Yes, you'd have to check zero again to see how close it is before hunting with it.

UPDATE: Handi Rifle .45-70...
« Reply #70 on: September 06, 2012, 02:34:56 PM »
Finally showed up at the local sporting goods store -.- Ordered it on the 18th of last month was supposed to get it on the 28th. Went in there and found out the guy had never placed the order !!! So it was the order was placed "again" on the 28th, and finally got it today. The lady had given me a free box of Hornaday Leverolution FTX 250flex tips for free, along with a Hoppes gun cleaning kit as compensation (Gotta love living in a small town). So I was a happy camper.
I'm planning on taking it up later this evening and having my buddy zero in my scope and shoot some fruit or water jugs or somthing cool with it. I'm anticipating my first hunt ever this winter. Plan on taking down my first black bear :) Anyway, here are a couple pictures.
Specs:
- Pentax Gameseeker III 9X50mm Scope
- Cheap UTG 6" Bipod
- Mossy Oak 9 round rifle cartridge stock holster
Bullets as pictured from left to right: BVAC 405gr flat nose and the Hornadays 250flex tips.

From a different Angle. I'm liking the look, glad I didn't go with the black synthetic stock and foregrip. The hammer clears the scope but i'd like to get one of those little hammer extensions that come out perpendicular to the gun.  I'm not digging having to dig my thumb way in and under my scope objective when I wanna draw the hammer back.

Thinkin' more recoil than the Flat nosed 405 BVAC loads? I'm contemplating on whether or not I should let my 60 yr old mom shoot it. :/ Anyone think it will kick harder then a heavier 12 gauge?
