Ditched mine, yet still drawn by the handi
« on: September 05, 2012, 05:42:02 PM »
Yep, the whole want something different strikes again.  I had a .243 Handi, traded in for a bolt, lost my job and had to sell to fix my vehicle so I could go find another....  It's been rough, but my family and I are still afloat so I'm not complaining.  In the mean time I traded a threaded 22 rifle for a Glenfield 30 so I still have a PA legal deer rifle.  I'm not a lever fan, but if it works...it works.  That brings me full circle back to the Handi.  Funny, irony, destiny, or whatever else you want to call it sure seems to apply.

I may end up being able to get a deal at an auction this weekend on a .223.  If it was manufactured prior to 1987, is there any reason I would not be able to put a 22h, 357, 44, or 30-30 barrel on it?  If after that date and before 2000, would I still be able to get the 357, 44, and shotgun barrels or just the shotgun?  It appears on the website that all frames 1987-1999 are being treated as SB1's, but reads like they are not giving them even that high of a rating.  I'm just trying to figure out if it is worth my time on Saturday.  I don't need the .223, I'd just like the frame to get a versatile do everything gun.

if you have a 30/30 and get the .223,
all you need is a topper and a .22
auto and all your hunting bases
are covered like a big bushel basket ;)

Just make sure the 223 your buying is really a 223, and not an orphaned SB1 frame with an 223 barrel improperly fitted to it.  As long as it's a factory 223, or the frame that the .223 barrel is on is really a SB2.

You can always buy a barrel from the classifieds, and fit it yourself.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

OldSchool, that's the type of thing I was worried about, but can do what I need on a SB1 as well.  At least to fit my food gathering needs.  I have a 22lr and a WMR in addition to the Glenfield, so I already have everything covered in a pinch except fowl.  I just would like it all in one package to keep together.

If it is a factory fitted barrel, the last three digits of the frame serial number will be either etched or stamped in the barrel lug. I have two SB2 frames and both barrels that came with it are etched with the 3 serial numbers and the extra barrels I sent in for have the last three numbers stamped in the lug. Just pop open the action and the three digits should be on the left side on the lug. At least you will know if it is factory fitted and if it is, you can be pretty sure you can get other barrels for it.
