357 max dies
« on: September 04, 2012, 06:39:40 PM »
Is there a difference between the 357mag & 357max dies? I have a 357max barrel on its way and I want to get my ducks in a row soon.

a max can tell you better than i can.

You can full length resize with mag set. The seating die wont screw in press very far but it works
handi rifles- 22 mag      22 hornet    223      7mm-08      308 chip shot     30-30 x2     30-06 shorty      358 cheez whiz     357 max     35 remington     375-08    410 rifled slug     454 casull     460 s&w     45 smokeless muzzleloader x2     45-70    50 huntsman    50-70 government shikari     20 ga.ush     12 ga.ush    12 ga.3 1/2     10 ga.imp.cyl. slug gun

So I can get by with the mad dies if I don't come by a Mac. I just looked around on RCBS's site and it seems like they are the same. They didn't list a different die set for each. I'm excited to get this together for my son, can't wait to see his face when he finds out.

MOST, 357 Mag dies will load a 357 maximum just fine.

If any doubt, contact the manufacturer of the dies.

With a straight wall case, the shorter dies work for the longest rounds.  (.38 special for .357 mag, .357 max.)  (.32 S&w for .32 acp, .32 s&w long, .32 mag, .327 Federal.)

I don't think the Lee 38 spl set will work with the Max.  If you go Lee I believe you will need the 357 Mag set.

I have three sets of 357 Mag dies, a newer Redding carbide, a 25 year old RCBS carbide and a 40 year old Lyman All American steel die set. ALL load 357 Maxi just fine.

Huh.  I regret every RCBS die set I bought, and wish I had bought Lee dies from the get-go.  More features for less money.

"I regret every RCBS die set I bought"

Really? Kind of harsh, since RCBS has a very good reputation.

I have RCBS, Hornady, Lee, Redding, Forster and 1 Lyman die. I do not regret buying any of them. I know 1 thing, if I ever have a problem with an RCBS die, it will be taken care of promptly and at no cost. They have done it for me, even though I told them it was my fault. I can not say the same about a Lee die. I have bought Lee dies, when I could not get others and I felt, I just had to have it now. But I know I am taking a chance too. Some times you get what you pay for. Don't get me wrong, I really like the Lee Collet dies, but I know that if something goes wrong with a Lee die, it is on me.

Maybe it is just me, but there just seems to be a smoothness about the better (more expensive) dies, that the Lee dies just do not seem to have. But that is my opinion, others will vary. Usually, when I go cheap, I later regret the decision...not always, but enough to make me really think about it a lot before buying the cheapest in the future. So, I do not let price drive my decisions, it is considered, but not the be all, end all answer.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I load 357 Max with a 38 Special Lee die set.

I contacted Lee, my preferred reloading equipment maker. They said my current 357 die set would work fine for 38 Special, 357 Magnum, and 357 Maximum.
There ya go, from the horse's mouth !
